Sorry Exotic, am heading to TJ on Saturday, June 19 and hope to be there for 3 consecutive days - returning to the East coast on June 22.
3 straight days? Talk about a man with a purpose.
Gives me an idea for a movie: "Brewster's Millions 2: Tijuana Boogaloo" Some guy has to blow through $30 million old pesos in 30 days in the Zona Norte.
Anyway, I'll be down this weekend also, and I'm always looking for a wingman to watch my back and swap 'war stories'

Will it be worthwhile being there during early to late afternoons?

I usually go between 5pm and 11pm...no later than 12am in the actual zona. What I love about latin countries is you can do all this early and still get a decent night's sleep.
If you are with a wingman you might be curious to stay around a little later but if mongering is your objective I don't recommend staying too late. It gets a little dicey. IMHO only bad things happen after 12am(minus tln).
Have coffee and listen to the mariachis(in front of el arco) at around 5pm then wander 2 blocks over to the zona. It's a nice way to start the evening.

Some good advice here on the zona.
Something that may, or may not have, been covered is to look back from where you just came quite often, without looking worried/scared. You could act like you are looking at the SG that you just passed, while actually looking at what is behind you. Many times they will come from behind to choke a person. Keep an eye behind you, and if something does not look right, stop, put your back to the curb, and let the person(s) walk by. If necessary step off the curb and into the parking area of the street. At that point, if necessary (probably not), you could even use the cars to cover your back. Seldom will they want a face-to-face confrontation.
I'll be down there this weekend, so if you see an old, gray haired gringo, with a big mass of blubbering muscle, say hello.
Health & happiness to all..........

Is the afternoons between say 2 pm and 5 pm worth it at all?

Worth what? Inexpensive sex with pretty girls? Of course it's "worth it."
:D
IMHO, it's probably the best time.

Absolutely. There are plenty of chicas to be had in the mid afternoon. The bars are open, the street girls are out and about as well. I prefer to monger in the daytime as I'm not much of a night owl.

Yes. You can always find something . I like the 5pm time because that is when they start coming out in numbers.
Although if you find the right girl at a slow time that has a lot of potential as well.

My preferred time for hobbying in the zona is noon to 4 PM. Especially good for being the first customer of the day for street girls.
Is the afternoons between say 2 pm and 5 pm worth it at all?
It depends on what you lookin for. I for one can't stand the afternoons and when I say that I don't mean it sucks, I just don't like it as much as night. Sure it's less crowded but IMO the percentage of better looking girls is higher at night but that's subjective. The biggest pro for nighttime is that it seems more of a party atmosphere. It just seems more lively and entertaining.

day vs. night in TJ
Yes, there are more girls out in the night and, by the default perhaps, more better looking girls. And, yes, the night is more of a party atmosphere.
In the afternoon, especially late afternoon, you actually can benefit in that you can run into day shift and some night shift girls who are just arriving.
Also, in the day you can really get a good look at the girls. It is much harder to hide blemishes in the day than at night.
Plus, in the day you find less hard core girls. Hardcore types usually work night shift.
You are probably more likely to get a low price in the day time. There are more johns at night so girls do not have to negotiate.
During the day you are less likely to get hassled by cops. It seems they do most of their crooked business at night!

I understand that the walk between the border and the zona is much safer during the afternoons than in the evenings too. Is it okay to walk it during the daytime or are cabs still the suggested way?

I am conscious that if its night not to cross alone, I'm crossing the bridge when others are crossing as well.

I have also walked it many times now and have not had a problem. The TJ FAQ says "NEVER" walk to the zona norte and if you're a total newbie than I suggest you heed that advice but if you've already been to the gentlemans playground that is the ZN and you are aware of your surroundings it's not such a bad walk. Just walk with purpose and urgency! like you KNOW where you're going.
There's a guy who hangs out at one of the alley ends. Always trying to run a scam, but mostly a big boisterous pain in the butt. Goes by the name Ramirez. Anyone know what is up with him? He is pushier than the other guys that just work a particular bar. Ramirez is always pushing a massage place. He's harder to shake than the others because his english is excellent and he is more in-your-face and bigger than most others.
Is Ramirez still pushing "New Body Bar"? Both times I ran into him he was handing out cards for it. The first time, he kept pushing that massage place and wouldn't shut up about it until I told him flat out that I leaving the zone was way too dangerous for my tastes.
The second time I met him, he saw me across the street and ran over. The guy had an impressive memory, so I actually hung out with Ramirez and went with the "Lucky Lady" bar (I think that's what it was, somewhere just west of the main action). He bought me two beers, and talked a cute bar girl into giving me better room service (in both quality and value) than I've gotten from anyone in Adelitas or Hong Kong. Cost me about $20 tip to Ramirez, so after the beers it was only like $15. As I speak basically no Spanish, I didn't mind having him as a tour guide / finder.
