I'm trying to think where you went. There's a burger joint, I don't remember offhand if it's Macdonalds, on the section of Uruguaiana before Pres.Vargas, which is the big multi-lane freeway. So still on the same side as BA.

If you ' crossed over to the other side', negotiating all the traffic and bus lanes without getting killed, you're almost there. Uruguaiana continues the other side of the freeway. You'll find if you keep going a few yards further you come to a small intersection.

On the left, just before the intersection, is Afrodite (which has never been worth bothering with when I've looked in) and a place that sells yakisoba. The new place I mentioned (if it hasn't suddenly closed down) is opposite. If there's nothing to your liking there are several others you can try in the immediate vicinity rather than crossing back over Vargas. They vary, none of them on the scale of Ba85, but sometimes you can be lucky. If not, there are also mid-range termas in the area or you can catch a Vargas bus half a dozen stops to VM (get off promptly at the next stop after the posh new train bridge in your right).

Bento. No need to go running around over there with a casa map. Just stroll around and see what you stumble into. It's kind of a nice neighborhood to walk around in the afternoon. Truer words never spoken! The area's far more respectable than it looks, and the 'holes in the wall' as Zingadoon so neatly describes them are fun to discover. Make a special trip to a special one and you might be disappointed. Do you personally know many gringos like this? BBBJ seems pretty fundamental to the GFE sessions that everyone seems to expect in Rio.
