It turns out all of the sweeter and more loving feeling I thought I would be missing in Bkk as I missed it 20-25 years ago can be had right here these days. I far prefer the BKK of 20 yrs ago to the BKK today. Fewer shopping malls, people were less focused on material goods as there were fewer to be had, no smartphones, less developed, lower prices, and overall a friendlier attitude towards westerners. It also had a grittier feel to it and you could pretty much do what you wanted to as long as you stayed away from drugs and did not hurt anyone.

I spent a lot of time in Cowboy in those days, at least three nights a week, and I remember gals who were eager to please, 80 Baht (2 dollar beers), 400 Baht barfines, and 1 k Baht STs and 1500 Baht LTs. It was a buyer's market all the way. Gals were competing for guys, not the other way around.

This wishful thinking if westerners wanting prices to remain the same over a 20 year period tends to come out in your interactions with the girls. Thailand is no longer a 3rd world country and due to globalization and the internet Thais are much more savvy to how the top percent live. The curtain has been ripped down and the ladies expect better these days.

Thailand was still reeling from the Asia Crisis when I arrived. Attitudes among the population towards foreigners was very upbeat and positive. As the economy improved the attitudes went in the other direction.

The biggest negative back then was the traffic (no trains then) but I always walked everywhere so it was easy.

Cowboy was raw and wonderful. Soi 33 Dead Artists bars were fantastic, and Thermae and the Rex Hotel coffee shop were both absolutely certainties.

I recall 3 of us (all caucasians) having a contest to see who could get inside Thermae and out again with a girl in fastest time. I was timekeeper. Ready-set-go. The winner was back outside in well under a minute; the other guy only seconds behind him. I sauntered in after being judge and we were all set with girls in under 5 minutes.

If you are married, that will facilitate a visa. However, I believe that neither you nor your wife will own that home after you both pass away and will not be able to pass it down to relatives. Once she marries a foreigner, I believe she loses her right to "own" that property and it becomes a 30 year lease type of situation where the Government will eventually take it from you since you (and her) and now considered to be foreigners.

I have a friend who is married to an Indo girl and they own property there under her name. They have a son who would inherit the property if he retains his Indonesian citizenship but he needs to decide before he turns 18. If he chooses Australian citizenship he will lose his Indonesian citizenship and then cannot inherit. But Indo citizens do not lose their right to own property unless they give up their citizenship.
