I stay around that area and also like to eat / drink early on in the regular bars around there. I've also been going to Afterskool for many years so they know me and I enjoy the naughty corner. He owns Deja Vu, Kiss, Midnite, Rio, Sahara, Rawhide, Spice Girls, and possibly more. These Soi Cowboy bars should be avoided.

But the dominant business model is very much what Appcer999 described; the soi is lined with scammer girls standing outside the bars that hired an agency to send them there to do nothing but make tourists think if they allow themselves to be dragged inside the bar and buy them Lady Drinks they might be able to take them away from the bar and have sex with them. Nope. That isn't what they were hired to do by the agency that employs them. Sure, everything and everyone has a price. Someone could come up with a number that all concerned would bow down and accept. But even then the girl does not fancy herself to be a hooker and the sex, if that's what it could be called, is likely to be dreadful.

Meanwhile, as you say, there are genuine go-go dancer P4 P girls in some of the bars. But the newbie can waste a lot of time and money on the more tempting scams before he gets to the real thing.

I just don't see that there is a Nana Plaza counterpart to that level of scam business model.

And I think that in large part is because of the location of each area. Soi Cowboy is easily visible from the most heavily trafficked intersection in Bangkok, Sukhumvit and Asok, also where the Skytrain and the Subway intersect. It can be spotted from the bts Skytrain platform. Naturally, it will lure newbies, tourists and the curious like no other go-go bar location in the City. The dominant business model is to hustle and scam as many transient tourists as possible as quickly as possible with little chance of having to engage with a disgruntled return customer tomorrow.

By contrast, you need to already know where Nana Plaza is in order to find it. You wouldn't stumble upon it on your way from one shopping mall to another. Yes, if you are sitting on a particular side of a bts train car as it passes Soi 4 at night, you might catch a glimpse of a few neon lit bars over there and walk back from the next station to check it out. But it is not a collection of bars that can count on catering to the one-time-only tourist who is practically asking to be fleeced as he passes through once. Nana Plaza relies much more on repeat customers in the know about Bkk's P4 P industry and expat customers. They can't get away with the scams Soi Coyboy does and stay in business long.

Late Edit: btw, the fact that there are many more freelancers strolling around the Nana Plaza area is more evidence that it is an area that caters more to the expat or experienced returning customer. Newbie tourists are far less likely to walk off with a freelancer they've met in the streets of Bkk to check into a short time room or back to their hotel room. But more experienced customers of Bkk's P4P scene are far more comfortable with the idea.
