I think it does show a history of entering, but I only believe this because of the comments I get from the custom agents after they swipe my passport; such as, "You should consider getting the passport card" and "There would be less wear and tear on your passport if you got the passport card."

I had a little ordeal crossing back myself. I was honest and said I was in TJ for two weeks. She had a hard time believing it but there is nothing illegal about it . I plan on doing the same thing for longer next time. I will say I know people.. My passport looks like a road map to sex central anyway.

I could have said I visited other areas in baja but why lie ? I did nothing wrong.

My chica from the other night said Hong Kong is like an amusement park for men. I think she may be correct.

In my opinion would be hacienda de santiago in front of la tropa, decent rooms for 35us x nite, is a block from the action, is safe for walking at night and is still away from all the noise of the strip and if you manage to get an all nighter they won't charge you any extra.

Yes, they keep a record of your entries into the country for many years (they link it all and score you in their risk management system... I guy that just goes to Mexico a lot is low, but if you'd been to Pakistan or Syria lately, you'll probably be questioned more). A lot of times they'll scan my passport card at the border and say "you go to Mexico a lot, don't you?" and I say yes and I leave. My record is several screens long and when the more inquisitive/bored agents look at everything it takes a while. Dude at Laredo saw I went to Russia and asked if I drank a lot of vodka there.

CBP generally doesn't challenge me on my business in Tijuana (or other cities). San Ysidro seems to be the least challenging for me. I'm mostly asked if I'm bringing anything back. When I'm in Zona Norte I usually only have a bottle of water from one of the bars in my hand and say "just this" and they let me go.

I've found the CBP in smaller crossings like Tecate, Calexico, Nogales, Laredo, and McAllen to be more inquisitive. The "I was at the bars" usually suffices.

I've also found the during busier times at San Ysidro and Laredo they just look at my card and don't scan it so not all of my trips to Mexico are captured. Of course, I was born with little melanin in my skin and "look American" so I'm less of a threat.

PS: CBP are the people you deal with at the border and airports (and the guys in the green and white trucks that look for illegal immigrants in the desert and run those inspection stops on the freeways). ICE is the agency that raids businesses looking for illegal workers, customs violators (like illegal importing stuff). ICE are also the ones that look for pederasts that commit their crimes outside the US. ICE and CBP are both parts of DHS.

I used to drive frequently across the border at Laredo (pre-passport card, and during some of the volatility they were having). My passport was and still is filled with lots of stamps from Colombia - where of course all the contraband the violence was about was coming from. The guys always noticed the Colombia stamps and I always got lots of questions and ultimately secondary because of it. I didn't really realize until years later how unusual and suspicious that must have looked.

Now we have the passport card. It is not clear to me how well linked up these two things are. When you enter with a passport (at an airport), are your passport card land entries brought right up with it, or does it take further cross-referencing. But in any event, the passport card has breezed me through, and I'm not sure how much travel history in seen with this one. One thing for sure is that if a random street cop looks at your passport card, he doesn't get any travel history. It needs to be looked up in a computer. I have stamps/visas from all sorts of crazy, really off the track countries most probably never seen even by Mexico immigration officials, which invite lots of questions from anybody who was inspecting, even just for a Mexico tourist card.

I have also used passport card for all sorts of random travel scenarios: to check in to domestic flights in countries such as Thailand, and Colombia, and checking into hotels everywhere, banking, and type of police ID check. Although not officially recognized (TSA barely recognizes them when you present it although they're supposed to) for much of anything, it looks official, and it is a versatile and fantastic general purpose ID card and nobody's every questioned it. The real passport never comes out except for the actual immigration stamping. The thing really has breathed new life into my mongering because it is so convenient to carry compared to my big old regular passport.

As I live several states away, and come to Tijuana for 1 weekend or sometimes 2 weekends a month, the ladies and the occasional nosy guy sitting at the Adelita's bar next to me tell me they've never heard of anybody coming from anywhere other than San Diego or sometimes Los Angeles (so you can just imagine what the customs agents think about it). And they all cab it over the border with alcohol on their breath at 3:00 AM. When I cross I do so during the day and carrying luggage (since I stay in Mexico side) and am usually just about the only gringo. So I obviously stand out. They usually don't ask many questions, but sometimes they do.

With except of the infamous Laredo Texas port of entry, I rarely get asked where I'm from. Those Laredo boys would sometimes ask me where I worked, what I did for a living, where I lived, where I was born, etc. Before the passport card they'd look through every page of stamps. My old passport got wet and was extra worn looking and they'd comment on that.

In San Ysidro, only once at 3am when I was going home smelling of liquor and cheap hooker perfume was I asked where I was going and I answered "home" and he let me go. Even when I lived several states away and crossing during the day, the San Ysidro guys weren't as intrusive.

The card and regular passport are linked just like your old passport number would be linked to your current passport number. At DFW they asked me about recent trips to Tijuana when I'd only been using my passport card (before the card, and I used my regular passport they never scanned it in San Diego). They probably have SSN, driver's license and other stuff all linked in your profile. I know when you fly they even have your credit card numbers, and frequent flyer number.

I live in another state and have a California ID Card, with a San Diego address. I got tired of agents asking me, why are you here in San Diego or other silly questions?
The last couple of years, I only cross the border with my ID card and my expired passport. I just tell them I don't want to loose the new one. I don't even carry the passport card for the same reason. Never carry anything to TJ that's a hassle to replace. ID cards are easy.
You can replace or get a duplicate license for a small fee, online with no hassle.
The only thing I can't figure is why the agents scan my expired passport?

this discussion gave me a couple of things to ponder. seeing how you have to give up your current passport in order to get the passport card and passport updated, i wonder if they will accept my old passport to go back and forth. i will ask this weekend, because paying the extra money to speed up the process is just plain silly, and if i stay away from hk too long, i'm sure i will experience withdraw symptoms.

also, i will no longer joke with the agents as if they are real human beings. i learned this lesson this past weekend. a female agent asked me after scanning the passport, "do you come here often?" and i really tried to bite my lip and not say much at all, but i could not resist, i replied, "why, are you interested?" yep, i was scolded for that one.

The agents' only interest in this is that you are a US citizen. Your expired passport is proof enough. Just bring another ID that is current and valid. Recently, I took my daughter to TJ to shop. She had lost her passport. I told her there would be no problem crossing back. All she brought was her license and a copy of her birth certificate from the US. I made sure to keep her away from the playgrounds in Zona Norte. Although, I almost made a wrong turn with her into the alley.

If you are worried about the entries in your passport being questioned, bring your birth papers and your picture ID.

This was me to the T. I established a friendship over this at "havana cuba" or whatever that cigar shop is. I met an expat living in TJ that never met anybody like me before. He wound up inviting me to see his property and a few sites then drove me back to revo. Even locals were tripping out that I stayed so long...they have no idea what they have going for them.

I've been thinking about the passport card but don't you need to hand in your passport to do so for a few weeks ? That needs to be timed very carefully. I felt trapped when I did that for extra visa pages.

Traveling freely is about the only thing I enjoy about america anymore. This will go on for as long as I have the money and health to do so....fuck em if the border patrol gets jealous. That is really what it's all about. I can see it on their face. Its getting worse every time I re enter the states especially when I buy alot. One customs officer coming back from colombia scolded me for buying latin music there. He said I could have bought that here in the states....lets see one song for 99cents on itunes or 300 on an mp3 for $1.50.
I told him they dont sell authentic colombian music here. He begged to differ.

There is nothing they can do about it . Just act politely and be assertive. People are miserable in this country right now and they let you know it. The BS starts as soon as you get back.

If you lose your California ID, you'll need to go to the DMV and person for replacement. A mail/phone/internet replacement is not available in this state.

The reason they scan your expired passport is for the same reason they scan a valid passport: They see if there's something on your record which would preclude your admittance into the US.

The WHTI law requires a valid passport, passport card or other accepted ID like a SENTRI card. You're being let in now for the same reason you read on this forum of people getting in with just their license and/or birth certificate. That is, CBP is working under some sort of grace period before getting serious about it.

Having said that, even with full compliance, the law does not deny entry to US citizens that show up at the border. The passport/passport card/SENTRI/etc ID requirement is designed to be a quick trusted source. At a certain point in the future, people without the correct ID (meaning non-expired) will have to go to secondary to prove their citizenship. For "American looking" people with an expired passport or just a state ID they might sail through without being challenged like a "foreign looking" American that shows up at the desk with no ID at all. Until the CBP person is satisfied you're an citizen, you can't get in.

You have to watch your stuff when you're in Mexico or anywhere else. A valid passport card is easier to carry than an ID + old passport book. Like Blourghus said, it is a great document to use not just for coming back from TJ.

I was also nervous because I may have needed to travel for work and didn't feel like explaining to my boss I needed a passport card to make my frequent trips to Mexican border towns easier (at the I lived 250 away from the border).

I was without my passport for about a week when they were quoting three weeks. Your mileage may vary.

I keep it in my wallet behind my driver's license so I can monger at a moment's notice. Which I do. A lot.
