Timeliness
As WC has pointed out, indifference to the value of time is a characteristic shared by many cultures, Indonesian and Thai to an, e but two. I'm guessing that the obsession with timeliness is limited to those fiercely competitive economies in which time really is money, but this may be too simplistic an explanation. I remember years ago, during my first weeks of living in Paris, when a French colleague patiently explained to me, over a leisurely lunch, that in the USA People lived to work, while in Frajce, people worked to live. This, at least where I worked, few people cake in early or stayed late, virtually no one worked on weekends, and everyone took his or her full six week vacation entitlement. I have to admit that the French seemed less stressed out than the average American.
Could be that those of us who are obsessed with time are the true anomalies worldwide.
GE.
Outside of the Germans and Japanese, I can't recall who else is well known for being punctual or even early (I said WELL known). We have Korean time, Indian time, etc. Koreans are fiercely competitive but interestingly take pride in the fact that Korean time exists. It has always been a joke with my Korean friends as I grew up.

Fiji time

I've been there a few times and remember especially the first one back in 1998 when me and friend were backpacking our way through this ancient cannibalistic culture. Moving our asses from Nadi to Suva I was surprised to see a busstation at all and even more surprised to se a detailed scheduel for busdepartures like 05:32, 06:32, 07:32 etc etc. I deliberatly leave out am / pm as that did not matter at all. With scheduel as stated each hour I was surprised we had to wait for around 4 hours for the bus. Just for fun I asked the kavadrinking driver which bust this actually was and I was surprised he had no clue. I remember we left Nadi around noonish.
On our way to the airport leaving the islands for LAX with Air Pacifics B747 our taxidriver was an hour late. Nothing we could do about that except from us beeing sure we lost our flight. We found it anyway best for us to atleast get ourselfes to the airport so we atleast could stay there. The driver knew more than us as he told us he knew the plane was allways delayed. Due to this he drove like crazy. He drove through a police radar control far to fast and he drove through the police stop post. Out of curiosity I asked the driver if he thought he would get caught? There where not a hole bunch of taxis around so he would be easy to spot. He told me no as the rules were it was up to him if wanted to stop or not. Maybe when he drove back he told me he might stop and pay the ticket. He would just sleep on it for a while. I think he fell asleep before letting us out as he did not want to get paid. He offered us soem kava though. Crazy.
The plane was delayed so that was no problem for us to catch. While onboard, as a couple of hours delayed allready, the captain informed us we would be delayed (surprise) and the delay was due to we had to remove a suitcase as one checked in passenger was not onboard the aircraft. This was as stated a pretty fullybooked 747. I remember I did had a windowseat and I was thinking well there are probably a lot of people working on this to remove this suitcase from the cargohold. After 30 minutes or so I see ONE person, probably drinking cava, almost sleepwalking towards our widebody. He finds himself a stair and I can hear the cargodoor opens under my seat. 3 hrs later the captain informed us the suitcase was found. 30 minutes later I heard a dunk and saw an suitcase hitting the tarmac under wher I was seated. 1 hour later the cargodoor closed. I saw the guy sleepwalking towards the terminal building forgetting the suitcase on the tarmac etc etc. We arrived LAX well delayed. Fiijians were nice though. I remember i fucked a maid in the bush behind our hotel. She was a bushlady herself in all aspects of the word. My friend cracked when he heard my conquest as the lady was taller than me and her hairdo looked like a bush itself. Fijians are tall:-)

They walk towards you, all 2. 5 metres of them with big feet, then they burst into a a happy big toothed " Bula " which is their Hello. But if you were to get on wrong side of them, serious problems. Many massage places in Nadi all run by Chinese. Happy but really big people. Friend ran a hotel there and said there was no point in shouting at them, they didn't really care.

So I am skyping with this DIA chick. She's late 20's nice body wearing a bikini and claims her family has a coconut farm in Mindinao so they send her an allowance in Cebu. Claims to have a degree in aquatic law (didn't know there was such a thing). I was planning to visit her next month in Cebu City (she lives in Alcoy which is South Cebu). I offered to meet her in Alcoy but she said there would be too much chismas (sp? Gossip). She asked if I would pay her bus ticket and I said of course and I will also give you some pesos if you stay with me. She said how much. I said 2 or 3000. She said she wanted 10,000 P. I told her she's crazy. No one will pay that. Then I blocked her on my skype account. Story #2: Met another DIA Cebuana on skype. This one was older, maybe 40's but had the biggest natural tits I have ever seen on a small Filipina frame. First thing she wants me to buy her a stove because she doesn't have one. Of course I said no. Then she gives me some sob story about her teeth and she has no pesos to even talk to me on skype. So I said ok I will send you 500 P on Western Union so we can talk. She said it's too little. I said do you want it or not. She said too little. I said again do you want it or not. She did not answer so I blocked her on skype. I would be happy to pay her 2 or 3 K to meet her but not just for online bullshit. I consider myself a generous guy but am not stupid. So many people get greedy. Like the Vietnamese chicks now want $200 a night. They're crazy so I don't go there any more. Geez it's only pussy. Most of the Filipinas are sweet and reasonable but there are many exceptions. Good luck guys.

I don't believe you. You cranky old FK. Of course you got upset. Maybe just a little?
Hope you are well. X.
I
The concept of time having no value is not restricted to random hook-ups; it's a ubiquitous characteristic here. Today I had what I thought was a doctor's appointment at 3 PM. When I arrived, about five minutes early, the corridor outside his office probably had twenty patients waiting to see him. In the outer office there were another ten or so patiently waiting. His secretary told me she would call me when he could fit me in. I asked if she was kidding and left. Two weeks ago, I walked out of a restaurant after waiting to meet a luncheon appointment who exceeded my fifteen minute wait time limit.
I don't think any of us will ever change this aspect of the culture and I imagine that the locals cannot I pretend our obsession with timeliness so ne'er the twain will meet I guess. I do know that I will never accept the lack of respect for other people's time. I no longer get upset. I just leave.

Story #2: Met another DIA Cebuana on skype.
Question. I have avoided using Skype in the past. Various folk told me that I could Skype on cam with only one other person at at time. Hence, I've stuck to YM, as I can carry on several conversations at once. Can one Skype with multiple Filipina at the same time on cam, without all of the girls knowing that I'm chatting other persons?

Only one at a time on skype, X. You can text chat with several simultaneously, tho.

Need to install a software by the name of "many cam". In YM I have no idea how a single cam can be used for numbers of coming.

.
Thanks X. Probably less cranky and more detached now than I used to be. Besides, for political absurdity at its most blatant, once need look no further than the Republican slate of candidates in the US. For pure comic relief, nothing in this country can touch Donald Trump, and as far as I know, no local politicians get more blond as they age.

Global SMS
On a related question to the current discussion of Skype cams.
I find it easier to retain and initiate conversations with chat mates through SMS. A lot don't have either wifi or regular internet access for skype / ym / facebook / viber etc. Assuming they have load, SMS is easier for them.
I have roaming on my Global pre-paid Filipino number. Unfortunately roaming SMS is prohibitive at somewhere around 15 pesos per message. So I quickly use up my load and have to send money to a chat mate regular to have them load my phone. Maybe it would be easier if I went to a post paid plan.
I have experimented with global SMS providers Skype and Local phone. Apart from the fact that both are horribly unreliable with not actually sending the SMS, the other problem is both say they will support showing the "sending number" as you define (they put a caveat depending on the country) but the sending number the chat mate sees is some arbitrary Skype / local phone phone number. No matter how often I train them to not to respond to the Skype number but to respond to my actual Filipino number, inevitably it creates confusion with them claiming I am not responding to their messages.
The strange thing is that if I send a SMS to my local Australian number, for both Skype and local phone it shows my designated sending number. So it appears a problem with the Philippines mobile phone exchanges.
Is anyone using a Global SMS provider that actually shows your designated sending number when sending SMS's to the Philippines?
