There is a continuum between a Farang sponsor, and a real Farang boyfriend. It can be hard to define when the Farang is back in his home country.

If a Thai lady in Pattaya will not go out with other men, and holds off while waiting for a Farang, that's a real Farang boyfriend.

The other extreme is a guy who sends a lady money while he is in his home country, but she goes with other guys. Which makes the Farang a sponsor.

In between those extremes are a bunch of different types of relationships. For example, one bar girl I know lives with a Farang and gets no money from him. She works bar, but is "drinks only". So the Farang is a boyfriend.

Her sister gets 50,000 baht a month from a guy who comes to Pattaya for a month during High Season. He's a sponsor.
