You talk as if I'm a newbie and didn't detail my experience. Go do your "own" homework as I've described the incident several times. I'm not going to do it again for you benefit.

It's a bad and dangerous area of Manila and from talking to quite a few others both on this board, other boards and in person it's not unusual to expereince problems there including getting pickpocketed by several people at once and also getting more violently accosted or assaulted.

It's many times more dangerous in that area, in general, (in my opinion and the opinion of many others) than say anywhere in Bangkok, Phnom Phen, Ho Chi Minh City, etc.(I've been all over all of them).

One friend has mongered all over the world literally for 30 years on many continents and in many major and not so major cities and said it's the worse place he's ever experienced in terms of actual and potential danger except perhaps Nairobi at it's worse.

Sure, not everyone is going to get robbed or accosted, or pickpocketed every time they walk there. That doesn't mean it's not more dangerous than almost any other popular mongering places folks go to.

If you don't agree, that's fair. I feel I owe it to folks to warn them. It does make walking down anywhere on Sukhumvit in Bangkok or walking "anywhere" in Phnom Penh or Ho Chi Minh City seem like sitting in your living room compared to that part of Manila, in my opinion.

Now going back to the Ermita/Malate area. As mentioned this area is a little dodgy. If you are truly new to the third world scene and traveling, it's probably not the best place to get your feet wet. It's dark at night and there are poor people on the streets. Sometimes a little pack of kids will come up to you at the same time and paw at you, while one tries to pickpocket you. Lots of beggars here also. If you can't handle this sort of thing, I suggest you not bother coming here. In the PI there are lots of poor people here. The information is here to read. There are lots of posts, you just have to take the time to read through them to get more than just the gist.

I have never heard someone say it's as safe as your living room in the Ermita/Malate area. It's pretty obvious if you are paying attention when you walk around. What would you think of someone I took the time out to answer private messages to where I was very detailed in my answers and then answer even more questions in regards to it and then see that he private messaged many other members the same questions and also asked the same questions on multiple threads as if it was so urgent? Problem is simple - the neighborhood, even during the day is packed with annoying street urchins, beggars, and lowlifes. Sitting at the Wendys one day I bought a two piece chicken & rice for a woman and her two toddlers - and some asshole (presumably the BF or father) came sauntering across the street (from the park), grabbed a piece - and half the rice and went back to drinking with his friends.

I slowly realized that putting any money into a condo, or even an entire building in that area would be a total waste of resources. The choices are to a) rent it to lowlifes and watch them roast cat over a fire built in the kitchen sink, b) rent it to mongers who typically leave a nasty residue of cigarette tar, condoms, cumstains and cheap alcohol - or c), use it as a private fuckpad.

Personally - I don't think the area is any worst then Market Street in San Francisco. But compared to other Asian cities - it's pretty bad. I'd take Itaewon, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Orchard Towers in Singapore over LA Cafe (and associated local dumps) any day.

Your safest option (in that area) is to play mall hunter and bag them in the eurotel (which has in wall safes for your wallet and cell phone). The shitbags who run the Malate bars don't do anything for the girls, or the neighborhood anyway. Hell, half the scam cabs in front of LA are owned by people related to or directly by the bar owners.

Remember, many of the girls haunting LA are the ones who didn't pass the very weak health exams required by the bars in Makati, EDSA or Quezon.

It's true that I cannot remember any part of any city in Vietnam that was quite a seedy as the area around LA. On the other hand, it's easy to over react. Sleazy and seedy does not necessarily mean dangerous. In the six years that I've lived here, and in innumerable trips to that area, I've never come close to having a problem and, as I've pointed out before, I'm old, not in the least bit intimidating and probably an easy mark.

It's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, and it's prudent no to do anything that makes you uncomfortable, but if you're reasonably alert and reasonably polite, you should not have any problems. Don't let fear get in the way of enjoying yourself. Take a taxi to the door and, when you leave, walk about thirty or forty meters down the street to grab another taxi.

I have read your posts and still trying to decipher "violent". The element is there and petty theft is there. I actually have met one of your supporters that you use who got frightened and it's not surprising to me. The last paragraph must be a field of dreams. This area is not for newbies or skittish people, that is true.

From knowing a girl who used to waitress simultaneously at a club on Burgeos and at LA. And sadly, observation.

I asked her about a familiar girl I spotted who dropped out of the Makati lineup and the rumor was she failed her checkup. She told me that some girls would rather go to a place like LA (or a dozen other bars) then freelance on the street.

A girl can fail for any number of obvious and often treatable reasons at which point she is back on Burgeos; but some can't go for very long without some freelance income. On a positive note. I have had some problems with bad smelling pussies from LA cafe. I always check the smell even though I will never bareback anybody from there.
If they smell bad I do give the agreed amount and ask them to leave in order to avoid confrontation.
Little checking and if possible visual inspection is necessary. Never ever DATY.

From my own observations, I would say that the types of girls who work out of LA Café can be broadly categorized as follows:

1. The hoary (or whory) old regulars.
2. Those staying at the boarding house upstairs. Also regular.
3. Moonlighters from other venues in Burgos, EDSA and Cubao. They may be rejects on health grounds but many visit after work if they have not been barfined (or have and want more money).
4. Less regular visitor from outlying areas such as Cavite etc who come in once or twice a week. Often seems to be single mothers.
5. The true amateur, often visiting with a friend, but not adverse to a spot of business. Seen once or twice and never again or becomes a very infrequent visitor. Sometimes students or in other gainful employment.

There may be other categories and obviously the dividing line between them are blurry. Also it is difficult, without being a daily regular, to distinguish between the various types. Even the haggard old regular will claim to be a student:D.

In all cases, the onus is on you the monger to check that the meat is fit for consumption. Don't know about you guys but I always err towards extreme caution and have a trusted and step by step hygiene procedure which does seem to work and has kept me infection free. But mongering is a risk takers game and there are never any guarantees. However, it never fails to amaze me how many guys will bareback LA Cafe girls:eek:.

My experiences have led me to a different conclusion. My one and only experience with a pick up from Robinson's Place Mall pulled a grab and dash when I took a moment out of the in-out-in-out action to relieve myself. Fortunately she only got about 1500 PHP, which I might have given her anyway if she'd stuck around long enough for me to finish. I have taken a few disappointing performers out of LA, but every woman I ever took out of there at least delivered what she promised.

GH swears by his conquests from Harrison Mall, but he may well have more game and a better figurative sense of smell than I have. Here's an important difference that I believe separates the LA freelancers from the mall walkers. I have had a bit of success at mall trolling but it does require a lot of patience and a backup plan. Then back to condo and spent 30 minutes picking up stray female hair from all over the place. Checked the car for stray female hair (yes the wife surely checks! ) checked in at airport and flew home.

Another wonderful few days in Manila. I miss it already.
