I would not put it past big pharma to create a perpetual vaccine wheel or stupid / corrupt politicians. In fact I assume that to be the case and the population lacks critical skills to assess data. Extended lockdowns will eventually fail because people eventually need to be people. Humans are social beings and are a bit dependent on each other. But that's the dilemma, without intervention, casualties would be a magnitude higher.

What's the solution? Completely open and reach herd immunity naturally? You would have April 2020 NYC death rates all over the world. If you use Brazil and Mexico as poster boards for "zero restrictions to herd immunity," you see that they're still nowhere near close to achieving that, even after a year.

I know that it is claimed that some countries (eg Russia, Mexico, Brasil) undercount Covid deaths based on their excess mortality in 2020 but it wasn't a global phenomenon.

I have heard a lot more people claiming that Covid death numbers are exaggerated to make people comply with the restrictions.

There might be a need for booster shots at some point, but the faster the current vaccines get in people's arms the less of a chance of a variant with real immunological escape. UK variant is under control in the UK where they had enough doses. While US should have solid vaccination rates by July, EU will take months longer, I wonder how many. And then there's the rest of the world.
