There was some chatter concerning obtaining the passport card without rendering the passport book in this forum not too long ago. Well with the advice from Big John, I decided to give it a try. First I called the US Department of State office and explained that I still had 4 years remaining before my passport book expired and I was still using my passport book throughout August, but still wanted the card. I was told to use the DS-11 form and I would need a note to accompany the DS-11 that explained my situation.
With the completed DS-11 form, note from my mother, and birth certificate, I went to San Diego County Office on July 27th. There is a processing center on the 4th floor and free parking to boot. They take the photos there as well for $10. After the photos, I sat down with one of the clerks and she checked everything for accuracy. I had to write two different checks, the first for $30 to the US Department of State and the other for $25 to the County of San Diego. The clerk informed me that I did not require a note of any kind, but she would include it with the paperwork because it looked nice.
I was in and out of that county office within 30 minutes. I received the passport card with protective sleeve in the mail today; August 16th. Just though I would share in case anyone else might be interested.

Good advice. For non San Diegans, you can do that at most US post offices (but you need to make sure your post office does -- their website will say if they do and whether an appointment is required...the fees are the same and you can also get the photos taken)

Go outside the terminal and look for the bus, I believe it is 992. It will make a stop at Broadway & Kettner (Kettner is the street on the East side of the San Diego Amtrak Station).
Get off at Kettner and walk across the street to the America Plaza Trolley Station. Buy a ticket from the machines ($2.50 ea. way) and get on the Blue line to San Ysidro (it will say it on the upper front of the trolley), which will be the last stop.
Get out of the trolley and walk towards the left, and follow the people up the ramp to the other side of the freeway. At the ramp on the other side go through the two turn styles and cabs will be in front of you. After the first one, there is a Cambio if you want to exchange dollars for Pesos. You can probably get a marginally better rate, but it is not a rip either. Yesterday when I checked the rate was listed as 12.6 to 1.
Either take a yellow cab to for $5.00 to the Zona, or walk across the street and take a white cab for $3-$5, they are more negotiable. Don't let the cab drivers talk you into going to a better club they know. Just tell them Adelita's or you will get out.
Have a good time, and if you are there this weekend and see an old, fat, Gringo with a shit eatin' grin on his face, it is probably me.

I am in San Diego on business for the next 3 months and had never been to Tijuana before so I decided to go tonight. I have been to DR, Brazil, Thailand, Costa Rica, so I had some pretty good reference points as to what I was looking for and or expecting. Brockton's Tijuana guide was on-point down to every detail. I asked the taxi to take me to the ADELITA bar. Got there, It was not very busy at first but got busier as the night went on. There were some fine ass women in there from the completely ass-less to the bom-bom pow type; old and young. I saw 1-10's in there. Some dude was talking my ear off so I had to jet to get away. Left and went into Hong Kong. The place was jam-packed, but looked to be well run and much more exciting and lively for my taste. There is a section in the back that was completely off the chain that had something I had never seen before. They have two tables (or counters) where a couple women were, completely naked and all soap-lathered up and guys were just knuckles deep in all holes. The women were fine and iit was hott! Band playing, dancers on poles, tons of fine asses walking by and rubbing something on ya! I will definitely go back. I left from there to check out Chicago. OMG! It was completely dull. Seems like an over 40's type spot. Could have been my timeframe, but damn, it was truely dead. Now, I got to Tijuana about 9pm and left about 11:30p. No "activities" this time as I was just scoping the places out, but I will be back next week. I know, I know, not a lot of exciting info, but there is more to come. I'll keep you posted.

It's not one of those "take it 30 min before" things. You can take it with breakfast and it not take affect until you want it to happen and BAM, its there. You'll be like (like Usher) O-M-G! It last about 2 days (depending on your build) and is excellent, and natural. Please know, I am not advertising for them. Take it or leave it. I am just telling you, I haven't been the same since I tried them. You won't either.

I plan to take the bus/trolley from the airport to TJ and check in at Hotel Ticuan. Does Ticuan need advance reservations? I checked out their site, its all in Spanish. I am arriving on a Wednesday so I guess it may be more open.

Thanks.[/QUOTE]You pay on the Bus 992 when you enter. The bus stops outside in the ground transportation area where the rental car shuttles stop. You will see a bus stop sign there. If you need any help, there is an information counter inside at the exit.
I don't think you will need advance reservations at the Hotel Ticuan when arriving on Wednesday.

When I stayed at Hotel Ticuan I made reservations online and brought the printed receipt with me; it is a cheaper rate, but just my experience. I stayed in the Business Suite, which is an inside room with no street noise. If you use Google, Google will translate the pages for you. I thought it was a great hotel for the price, once again, just my opinion. On Wednesday, you should have plenty of options. I had the manager show me some of the other rooms, and he seemed happy in my interest in the hotel.
It is a bus city bus and is about $1.50. It stops at a city bus stop right outside the terminals. I am told, never done it myself, that it runs about every 15 minutes. I have several friends who fly into San Diego that take this route.
The Ticuan is very upscale for most hotels in the Ave. Revo area, especially for the cost. They have a twenty-four hour fruit, small sandwich, coffee, juices table in the lobby. I would suggest as Tomjackin says that you print a copy of your reservation. I made one at the desk for my return one week later. I asked the clerk if I needed written confirmation. of course it was , "Oh no amigo, it is taken care of". Well, of course amigo, the next week it wasn't. Fortunately they did have a room. They seemed to be pretty strict about the 3 PM check-in. I had to wait in the lobby for an hour until 3 to check in. Still it is a very nice hotel. When leaving they have a shuttle van that will take you to the border. You should have no problems with a Wednesday check-in.
You can save some money, especially with the street girls, by exchanging money. They convert at 10-1, and the exchange rate is actually going to be about 12-1. So a session they quote $30.00 for, at 300 pesos will actually be about $25.00.

I believe they got rid of the refreshment table a few weeks ago. It was rapidly shrinking anyway. First, no sandwiches, then fruit, etc. I have a feeling they thought it was bad for the restaurant. Grab a snack at the OXXO around the corner.
Last time I was there, they also discontinued the van service from the hotel to the border. You may want to contact them to see if they reinstated the van service.

Quite some time ago, I would take the Greyhound bus from Revolution to the border. As they would get you through customs a lot quicker than standing in the line on the weekend.
Does that still exist today?
