Aside from the price of pussy, one of the best things about BKK was the price of taxi rides. It seems that the price of riding in a taxi has escalated to that of riding in a LBFMPBR.
Seriously, in my previous travels in BKK, getting a metered fare was the norm. Sure, there were occasional instances where drivers would not agree to a metered trip. Notoriously, the end of Soi Cowboy that meets Asoke where the taxi "mafia" would demand a premium. No problem to get a metered taxi at the Soi 23 end of Cowboy. Another place where the taxi "thugs" ran the show was Siam Square at night near Hard Rock Café. And, of course, one needed to be on alert for the scam drivers who might conveniently "forget" to turn on the meter when leaving the airport.
Now, I've been in BKK for 10 days and have yet been able to grab a taxi ride for the metered price. All rides have been by quote / negotiation. For years, a ride from Soi 3/ Suk to Soi 23/ Cowboy was about 42 baht. Last week was 150 baht. 200 baht for Soi 19/ Suk to Nana Plaza.
Look. I get it. The price for gasoline and everything else has gone up. But not enough to justify the gouging taxi drivers are getting away with. And it isn't just me that is ranting about this. Local Thais I know are bitching about it too.
At least one could say that you can get screwed by a taxi driver cheaper than by a Thermae damsel.

We went through this a couple of months ago, when there was a news story about an old-timer threatening to dive from his balcony. The guy was in love with a bar girl, she told him repeatedly she had no interest in him, he bought her lady drinks until his savings ran out (he was doing 10,000 baht bar tabs every day). When his money ran out, he threatened to jump.
It happens I know the bar girl, and she told me about this as it was happening over the last year. If she didn't sit with the guy, her manager threatened to fire her.
SubCmdr may have seen some of this as it was going on at Cat Flaps, since the guy was there every day.
