The checking in actually protects you. A sensible woman won't steal or cause problems knowing you have a way to track her down) the method I have used is to walk in with the girl and go straight to security and ask which floor the bar is on. They will naturally direct you and assume you're just there to have a drink with your lady friend. I've had two girls up to my room that way (and to be safe we actually went to the bar for a drink beforehand).
Again, I'd only do this with girls I know. A girl without I'd or who is reluctant to provide it could mean trouble.
