Here's what happened to one monger who tried to attend a mongerpalooza back in 2004. He didn't make it 2 blocks into Juarez, before he got robbed by the cops. I don't think he's been back to Mexico, since this incident happened.

I just got a room in EP, rented a car and decided to just check out some of the local attractions there. I did visit the Space Museum and White Sands in Alamogordo but I decided that I did not need to press my luck and venture another trip south of the border. I seriously doubt that I will ever set foot in Mexico again. At least that is the way I feel right now.
It's not like I have not been shaken down by crooked cops before, but each time I about halfway felt like I deserved it, being someplace I "shouldn't" have been or doing something I "shouldn't" have been doing. But this time I was walking down the street with an overnight bag over my shoulder in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon. Nowhere near the Zona, heading away from downtown. And don't anyone start apologizing for these pricks, no matter how poorly paid someone is there is simply no excuse for police robbery of tourists. It just ain't right and there is no excuse for it. I don't mean to belabor the point here, but 2 days ago I was at work. I was talking to one of my fellow co-workers, and told him I wanted to go to Juarez, to get with the hookers over there, but I was afraid of the cops. He told me about another guy I work with, who I'll call "Jose" here.
I know "Jose." I see him everytime I go to work. He's a nice guy. He lives in Juarez, and speaks fluent spanish. (We talkin fluent here guys. His espanol is perfecto, with no problemo. :) ) His english isn't real good, but he's very nice. He's hispanic.
Anyway, my fellow coworker was telling me one time "Jose" was walking home from work, into Juarez, when the Juarez cops stopped him. They put him into the back of their "dog catcher" truck, and drove him out to the middle of nowhere in Juarez. They got him out of the truck, and took his cell phone, his watch, his wallet, and everything in it, driver's license, money, etc, then they left him out there. He had to make his own way back into town, where he lives. He always dresses down, and always wears a hat. He's about 30 years old.
I asked my co-worker if there was anything Jose could do about this shit. My co-worker told me no, that the police supervisers are in on this shit.

[/quote]yeah i hear about that stuff happening all the time in mexico, which is one reason i have always stayed away from it in the past. my premier trip to tijuana it was very evident that the police are as corrupt as the day is hot. i don't think we have even 1/4 the police in any city in the us than what i saw in tijuana. they were on every corner. i have been to some really shady places around the world and to clubs that were owned by people you generally want to stay away from. but i have never felt as uncomfortable as i did in mexico, mainly because there isn't much you can do when it's the cops shaking you down.
i kind of wonder if they stereotype the people they pull over. i wear nice clothes and don't hide the fact that i'm not poor and have never had any problems anywhere, but i do have a bit of a military look to me which perhaps is enough for them to stay away. i would imagine every once in awhile a cop has got to get killed pulling that crap. i mean cops in the us get killed who don't do anything wrong. i honestly would rather have the drug cartel in charge of the city than the police down there. i too have a story of a friend of mine who drove their harleys down to tijuana and a police officer came up behind one of them and grabbed them or something because these aren't the kind of guys you do that do before they even realized it was a cop they had him down on the ground and then all the federalies jumped in. long story short they spent awhile in their jails and went back to the us without their bikes, money, or anything else of value.
i wonder if they are truly just after money. if so that's not that bad, i think if i had a run in with the police i would try to give them money first. what's 20-100$? shit i would've paid $100 to any cop who has ever pulled me over just to be on my way faster and not be bothered with tickets. someday i will venture down to around juarez because of some of the reports i've heard about the girls down there, hopefully i will get by unrep001hed.

I visited downtown Juarez this afternoon to meet a "regular." We had a bite to eat, did the deed, then I walked back to EP. Passed a few policia on bikes, vans, etc, but was not bothered.
Xfactors, the report about "Jose," the fellow you work with, is interesting. Jose was apparently left out in the middle of nowhere by the policia. I have heard of this happening on occasion. It would be interesting to know what time of day, or evening, this happened. And also how long ago did this happen?

I don't know when I'll go back to work. AC in my apt went out, so I've booked off work, until it's back up and running. It's 100 degrees inside my fuckin apt. :(
