Are you really serious?
Thanks
Good suggestion.
Come on! I know people can be really gullible sometimes but this takes the cake. Why on earth would a hospital (or anyone else for that matter) want to feed and shelter someone while they wait for payment? I am sure that they would much rather free up a bed for a paying customer, don't you think so?
I would expect a a hospital to keep out the people that can't pay the bills but not keep them in.

Hospitals are crap.
A short time girl I've known for years and has "provided me" with some cute girlfriends, claims one of her gfs (who I saw last trip) h
"yes she's still in the hospital for weeks now coz she can't go out if they dont pay her hospital bill, you know she has no place to sleep in hospital and they dont bring her meal either coz they dont pay her bill in weeks, that's the regulation in the hospital they dont take you in if you dont have down payment and you can't go out either if you still dont pay her bill. I try to send you her pic. We just wait for her father to sell their land in province, but suddenly it's hard to sell property in the province that's why her parents still dont have money to take her out in hospital. You know, just my mother who brings her food in her hospital so she can eat 3times a day"
Thanks
Yes its true that some hospitals won't release patient unless you settle the bill. Could be a scam? My advice is if you really intend to pay (better to loan it. Who knows you might get it back after the 'land' is sold). Better contact the hospital directly and wire/TT the money directly to them. Safer.
All the best.
A short time girl I've known for years and has "provided me" with some cute girlfriends, claims one of her gfs (who I saw last trip) had to go to hospital for an emergency (Ectopic Pregnancy).
She has been asking for money claiming that the hospital won't release her friend unless her bill has been paid. She emailed me (I fixed up the English a bit to improve readabality):
Thanks
Contact the press if you think there is any chance it is true.
Does anyone know if the hospitals in Angeles pretty well and if there's any possibility of any truth to this story? Or is just a total scam? It sure sounds over the top, even for Angeles!
Plausible, but probably a scam.
Medical insurance is virtually non-existent there. You have to pay for everything "out of pocket." It is true that hospitals can hold a person until the bill has been paid. I know, because I grew up in PI (up until HS). I've heard people being held up for 2 days, but never 2 weeks.
My guess is that they got that story from someone somewhere. They exaggerated it to ask for the desired amount of money from you. Besides, it is very common to make "utang" (ask for debt) from other local people there. They could ask money from the other girls. And the other girls may have been giving the same "sales talk" to many other mongers in AC.
I normally cut communication with people once I leave the country. I use a local Sim card, and if I'm around, I text them and see if I can hook up. If I'm out of the country, I'm simply out of touch.

The story is that this girl has been "locked up" in hospital for close to a month now!

Complete bullshit. I know the hospitals in Angeles and that would never happen. She needs to sharpen the story for it to be even remotely plausible.

Tiger Sucks
What is wrong with this airline?. Suppose to be part of Quantus air but no comparison to the service. I've flown on airlines that owns just 2 planes in far flung countries that had easier booking.
I had tried for 2 days to book a flight with Tigerair and was rejected 4 times on line (denied all of my 4 credit cards and 1 debit card). Ok , got the oversea phone # and called, guess what, they had me on hold for over 45min (Intl phone long distance rates )and all I heard was the stupid boring music and somehow at a little past 49 min, the phone was automatic disconnected?
Longest waste of time of my life on the phone for nothing.
Still haven't been able to book anything even now.
PT
Yes I know they advertise low fares but they have a disturbing policy regarding refunds - there are'nt any.. If your flight is cancelled for any reason, your ticket is forfeited. You must buy another ticket to rebook another flight. They have done htis too many times for me to risk them.

Thanks
There _have been_ cases reported in the newspapers of patients being kept in hospital until the bill is paid. There is a grain of truth in it. I dont recall this being ever reported happening in AC.
Hospital & medical bills are catastrophic to the average filipino requiring the hat being passed around the family to help pay. The selling of the land rarely happens but often the land is pawned.
Everything described can & does happen BUT you must do some careful checking to verify. My gut feeling on this one is to cautiously assume bola bola until proven otherwise.
Just ask her for the full name of the girl and the correct name of the hospital plus contact number, then do some research online to see if it actually exists. If it does, just call to verify the story. I highly doubt it's true.
Yella Man
In Philippines everything can be fixed. Even the hospital girls will give a letter on Hospital letterhead authenticating the story for some bribe.
Short of personally going there to verify I do not see the how you can find the truth.
By the way holding the patient against her will for non-payment is illegal in PHI. Do not know whether it will be enforced.

Budget Airlines
Suppose to be part of Quantus air but no comparison to the service.
Actually, Tiger is based in Singapore and is owned by Singapore Airlines.
They are much better in service as compared to CP!
If your flight is cancelled for any reason, your ticket is forfeited.
Just wait until you try to get a refund from Cebu Pacific! :(
They give you the runaround until you give up!

locked up in hospital

Carmex,
are you really certain that it is complete bullshit? I was told by a girl that it happened to her too! I would not bet my life, but I could well imagine that it is not impossible!
Cheers!

Thanks guys
I've emailed my st friend asking her for the name and address of the hospital and also her friend's registered name and that one of the guys I know in Angeles will kindly check it out for me.
I'll let you know if she gives that info or if she gives some excuse as to why she can't tell me!
And, you're right, in the Philippines so many strange things happen. I guess that's one of the reasons it's interesting! I've lived and worked in Asia quite a bit, and the fact that there is so much I don't know and understand in Asia is one of the great attractions! :)

Hmm, well, ok, then maybe. But it goes against the entire concept of health care and 'do no harm'. I know a doctor in Tacloban, (kind of fat and about a 5) and I will ask her. My gut reaction is bullshit. Unless some kind of emergency trauma or something, usually the hospitals down there make you pay in full before they do the procedure.
GF's cousin contracted Dengue fever (temp 103, WBC count below 7,000, H n H 6 and 18, etc.) and the hospital in Cebu still treated her even though the family had no money and could not pay.
This causes me to believe the story is bullshit.
Stranger things could happen though.
Edited after I.M. from Leyte.
OK, straight from the source:
"Hi JM, question? Could a hospital in Phils 'hold' a patient and not release for non payment?
JM: Its against the law. All they have to do is report it to DOH. There are private hospital who do that. But what i know of, all they have to do is promissory note.
JM: Hospitals are only allowed to hold patient if they still need medical care. If its due to non payment they just have to report it. What hospital? I can call DOH.
(after telling the story)
JM: Then its not good. What hospital is that? I think its not true."
So it looks like, if you want out of the hospital, all you have to do is call the Department of Health and sign a promissory note. Easy. Guess that shoots a hole in that story huh?
Thought so...

I have used Tiger to go to Clark a couple of times a year for the last four odd years and not had a problem. However, if something does turn pear shaped the reviews on the airline blogs say it is impossible to get a refund or contact them...like all cheap carriers. CP and Jetstar also have the same reputation as regards complaints and rescheduling. OTOH, on the one time when Tiger rescheduled me, they gave me plenty of notice and emailed the new times etc etc. I figure that as long as it is only once in a while I get shafted, the overall cost is low. However, I am also pretty flexible with my time since I am partly retired and if they rescheduled me to leave AC a few days later, I would just have to sob and complain to my barfine for those days. Poor me, eh?
