Not all girls will go with you to your preferred hotel for many reasons which again have been discussed here in depth. If she is not willing to go with you to your preferred hotel then you take your chances. On my first Centro experience I let the girl take me to a $6000 room on the strip behind Veracruz and it did the job.

As far as bringing an unlocked Verizon phone to Colombia, unless you bring a registered Verizon SIM card with you, you won't be able to use the phone, at least that is what Verizon told me, and probably the source of the problem you experienced and a good warning for others but easily solved.

Before I came down I brought three registered Verizon SIM cards with me so all I have to do is put the SIM card in an unblocked Verizon or other system compatible phone, and the phone can be activated on line at least according to what I was told. I'm not a phone expert by any means, and know a lot of people don't like Verizon as their very expensive but the money is not an issue for me and I've had great customer service from them.

There are cheap places in Mayorista and El Centro, but they're not in Poblado.

These are the type of questions better asked before you settle on a place to stay.
