On two occasions, I kept details on the conversion rate I was declining so that I could calculate how much money I was saving by declining. On Jan 23, I saved $13 on a 900,000 peso ($259) ATM withdrawal by declining the 3,310 conversion rate. The better, wholesale rate of 3,477 I received (after reviewing my statement back in the US) represented a 5% improvement (or $13) over the rate I declined. On Jan 26, I saved $10 on a 1,000,000 peso ($284) ATM withdrawal by declining the 3,403 conversion rate. The better, wholesale rate of 3,525 I received represented a 3.6% improvement (or $10) over the rate I declined. I hope this quantification helps people realize that they need to decline the offered US $-COP conversion.
