A short update on Porto Seguro and Arraial dÁjuda.

GENERAL:
* The tourism has gone down very much the last years. Still quite a few people around at New Year and Carnival, but not close to what it used to be.
* There have been a lot of violence in Arraial the last two years. Many people have been shot. Mostly people involved in drugbusiness, but also a few gringos living in Arraial. There have been several executions daytime in the center of Arraial. There are much more police around than it used to be. The police have done a thorough cleaning, killing of many bandits and vagabundos. You´ll se much less crack-heads down at the main praça in Arraial. Only the last week there have been two killings in the bairro.

NON-PRO ACTION:
* IMO the main reason for coming here is because it´s easy to meet non-pro´s. Local girls or tourist girls.
* Bad news: It´s no longer the gringo-paradise that it used to be in the early nineties, when a gringo was a rarity and the local girls were competing about getting laid by a gringo. Both Arraial and Porto have become too touristy, neat and tidy. They have lost a lot of the old charm. Many of the old bars and clubs have turned into T-shirt shops, pharmacies, cafés etc.
* Good news: It´s still quite easy to meet non-pro´s, but it takes some more work. It helps if you´re young and/or speak good portuguese.
* Local girls: There are lots of very beautiful dark-skinned local girls. Flirt, date and hope for some good luck. The really beautiful ones are harder to score. It helps a lot if you have local friends that can introduce you to these girls.
* Tourist girls: There are lots of tourists coming every week from Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio etc. These excursions usually stay for one or two weeks. Those girls party quite a lot. Many of these girls never had any real contact with gringos and are quite curious to get to know gringos.
* When you find a girl that you like: Be quick and go for her straight ahead and don´t waste any time at all! You will not be the only guy looking to get laid. You´ll compete with all the tourist guys and hords of local capoeira guys.

* Ho-houses: There used to be a strip club, Bagdad Café. It´s still there but it looks closed. No loss if it´s closed for good as it always used to be a shitty place. There are also some ho-houses with better quality in Baiano, the big favela outside of Porto Seguro. Not a safe area unless you go there with a local living in Baiano.
* Streetworkers, Porto Seguro: You´ll find them on Passarela do Álcool and down at Praça do Relógio.
* Streetworkers, Arraial dÁjuda: You´ll find them on the main square, at the drink-stands and on the main street. Try the bars Buda and Morocha (ex Gira-Sol).
* Some evenings you´ll find almost no pro´s at all and other evenings a dozen of pro´s. In low-season it can be tough to find a pro. Right now, before carnival there are about 15-20 pro´s circulating every evening.
* Pro-detection: Which are pro´s? If you have some experience of Brazil you´ll quickly notice which girls that are pro´s. If you are unsure, go ahead slowly or wait for them approaching you. If you offer money to a local regular girl you propbly get a good beating from her friends.

I want to contribute also to your "Porto Segro". Report:

One of my relatives works as a "Delegado" in Porto Seguro. He is assistant Public Prosecutor and when I see him from time to time the tells me the worst stories. Security and justice is a matter of money. As a tourist you normally have nothing to fear as you stay out of trouble and away from drugs / drug-pushing.

The majority of the people killed (approx. 300 per year) are linked to drugs. 50 % of the working girls there are on drugs. Last year they had approx. 30 WG killed in relation with drugs. We are talking about the bottom-feeders, comming from the Favela de Ratos. These girls are used to rob you blind and they simply robed the wrong guys. I really mean that these girls are very bad news.

Two years ago a guy was robbed by a WG. She drew a knife on him and he simply shot her. As he was the son of a big shot in the Federal Government is was ruled within 5 days that it was legitimate self-defence and he was aquitted. Try to do that somewhere else.

Security in Brasil is relative: If you go to the state of Acre, Roraima or Rondonia the law is with the old families. Like the Wild Wild West.

In States of Bahia, Rio or SP it is much better but beware!

This post is not about whining or complaining. It's just a reflection how the night scene has diminished in some brazilian cities during the last 20 years.

Rio de Janeiro: Help gone, Meia Pataca has changed and also other very good clubs like Gipsy, Cozumel and some Lagoa clubs are long gone.

Salvador: Pelourinho used to be excellent for pro's and non-pro's but today it's quite dead. Barra used to have lots of bars and many women looking for gringos. Only a few bars remains. Porto the Barra also used to have lots of bars and a small alley filled with mini-bars and pro's. Also history. Just a few bars remaining with mostly crack-ho's.

Natal: In the 90's before the charter tourism arrived in Natal it was a paradise. In Praia dos Artistas there were two bars, Sax and Muralha, with hords of easy non-pro's. Gone.

Fortaleza: Also in the 90's, the sea-front of Iracema were a cluster of bars and clubs. The famous Deck Bar (Moby Dick) were always full of women, pro's and non-pro's. Today there are no bars left on that strip.

Manaus: Continues to have a great nightlife, but many of the really god spots in centro are history, Praça the Polícia, Mitoso etc.

Porto Seguro: In the early 90's before Porto Seguro were invaded by the tourism industry it was the most outstanding place in Brazil for picking up non-pro's. The major club was the Lambateria. You could easily score two non-pro's there every night. When the tourism industry arrived somebody burnt down the Lambateria and opened up a bunch of miserable clubs outside of the city.

Arraial the'Ajuda: Same story as Porto Seguro. It used to be heaven for meeting non-pro's. Broadway were filled of bars and crowded every evening. Today there are mostly T-shirt and souvenir stores left on Broadway.

Morro de São Paulo: The island used to be very popular for the young crowd. The beach parties were totally wild and people having sex on the beach were normal. Today it's too neat and tidy with boring troubadour bars.

Jericoacoara: In the 90's it was an unspoilt paradise. Beautiful scenery and wild parties at night. Today the charm is gone. Buggies roaming the streets and no longer any crazy parties.

I still love Brazil of the country and people itself, maybe even more so, but the mongering situation gets increasingly diminished.

There's a couple of places you haven't mentioned (and I know they are not your favourites but for adding to an overall picture)

Sao Paulo continues to thrive. Somewhat on the standard and minimum price / value ratio of a good RJ Centro private apartment but different in style. The downside is that, outside of the places for sex, Sao Paulo is hard work. Not that you can't enjoy yourself, since you can, and in considerable style, but it is a hard work city to get around, it is enormous, tiring, and it's expensive just to cross the road. For those that enjoy an 'inside guide' I'm sure ABG will keep them right, but for others, be prepared for a long getting-to-know-the-place. No beach of course.

Then there's Belem. I've not checked this year yet and maybe it will change with the World Cup but it has been constantly adept at opening new seedy holes or re-inventing existing ones. For the more choosy, Locomotiva offers the more affordable upscale options. Downsides are that it is miles from anywhere, lacks any big city amenities, and no-one speaks any English (in fact their Portuguese can be barely recognisable). And if you don't like seedy and slightly dangerous, your options are very limited. And although it's on the coast, you have to do quite a bit of travelling to find anything resembling a beach.

BH. Are they really going to close down the high rise shag-shops? Rather a lot to just get rid of. And no beach of course.
