They coach the girls and write the sales copy for their profiles on the dating sites where they fish for lonely hearts. When the pension check falls short or the nest egg gets blown on poo-say and grog some expats turn to the second oldest profession. They become cybernetic pimps.

I think it's ok to send small amounts as a gift. It's the guys who are stupid and don't know how to say "no" that get abused financially. If it wasn't a pinay milking them it would be someone else. I never send money nowadays. Beggars will last 3 sec on my Yahoo-list. I did however send money a few times during the years. A couple of times it turned out to be a well invested token of trust. "Scammers" is in fact quite a wide definition. I think it is a way to categorize people who either waste our time or money, or both, and do not produce sufficient return on the investment (but wait. This is the exact description of my "advisor" at the bank).

The simple ones are easily detected and consume very little time. The more elaborate scammers often provide some value, but in the end it turns out to be less than we expected. Still perhaps on a level that will only be considered problematic if we weigh pride and ego into the evaluation. The professional scammers are fortunately very few, and most of us only knows about a friend of a brother of a guy that we heard of, that was scammed of something worth crying about. I can guarantee anyone that Richard S. Fuld, Jr. Created more on-line scammers than the combined ISG population will, in all eternity. One could say that Fuld is Indian Chief Scam number one (or perhaps I have him confused with Chief Henry Paulson?).
