Private Security, National Guard, Municpal, Federale, Marines, and others patrolling!
Just spent 4 nights at The Rio Rita for the Christmas festival as well as to visit the zone. There were a combination of security / law enforcement / military forces patrolling the tourist area along avenida revolucion and in the zona norte. While I personally did not have any interaction with any of these folks other guys weren't so lucky. One of my friends reported being robbed by a municipal policewoman. I also personally witnessed cop patrols on foot harassing white gringos headed into the zone. I got lucky as they were busy harassing and douching to pay attention to my presence walking to purpose and urgency to get to and from the zone. Previously on my visits this year I had 1 incident where I was pulled over but the stop actually went well and I was instructed to hold on to my money in my hand as my wallet was searched. However, this being the few weeks before Christmas it looks as though the honest cops are also pressed for cash for Christmas shopping as my buddy was robbed my a municpal.
Tijuana is trying hard to attract more tourism but stories like these that have been going on for years and years have caused most americans to not even think about visiting Tijuana because it's hard to feel safe when the people who are supposed to be protecting and serving the people are also the most likely to steal and rob.
I have for the last few years on my trips to Tijuana begun carrying a "monger wallet" this is a small wallet with a slot for 4 cards as well as a spot for folded cash.
The 4 cards are.
1 expired drivers license so if the policia try to keep it for a bribe I can walk away from it as my actual license is sitting in my safe in the room.
1 debit card linked to my schwab monger account which only has a couple hundred dollars in it for emergency purposes.
1 room key to my hotel.
1 expired or valid HK VIP card. lately Ive been booking rooms using points so Ive had to stay outside the zone and since HK only does 3 month cards for more than the price was of 1 year previously I have stopped purchasing the VIP card as I'm not in the zone enough to really make it worth it.
And in the cash portion I carry just enough to have a little bit of fun for that evening.
Be careful out there brothers. Move with a sense of purpose and urgency, keep your head on a swivel, and do what you can to protect your wallet and wellbeing while exploring Tijuana.
Policia's Worst Bullshit Charge
Charged for giving money to street beggars? This is the most ridiculous charge by policia ever. I suppose these dumb policia think it's legal for cartels send kids on bikes to collect heavy taxes from all street vendors regularly.
Christmas is approaching. Policia is all over La Zona shaking down mongers for Christmas money. Multiple groups of heavily-armed Guardia Nacionals were patrolling on foot and trucks, searching pedestrians. Did see them arrest a bar girl across from HK back door, also a guy in front of Pepe's parking.
I was driving North on Ave Revo, seeing no policia cars, but 1 came out from nowhere and followed my car over the bridge. They acted very professionally, likely because I showed them the Sindicatura card and the car has front and rear cameras. I got out of the car, genuinely pissed off, showed a mean face, confronted them loudly. They were trying to calm me down, did not search me or the car, let us go in 5 minutes. If they rob me I would follow up with complaints to their station and Sindicatura.
The bros should complain about specific personnel to the new mayor, Ismael Burgueño, Tijuana chamber of Commerce, Sindicatura ect. Even anonymous letters or emails with some details of date, time, car numbers, personal descriptions ect would put some screws into them.
