In other words Ali.... there is a search function where you could type in the name of hotel, in this thread... and get a lot of reports on the hotel. There is also a great report of hotels by a member who took the time to compile the listing and post it here so people can read it and find their answers easier then just searching. AsiaTraveler2 posted it and it is listed under the reports of distinction even....

To be kind as I am in a nice mood today and to make up for my rude brother 1ball, i've stayed at 5 of those and had taken girls in all five of them. 4 of them are posted about almost every week it seems like. So I am sure you will have no problem finding reports if you read or search a little.

If you are really adventurous then you might even find out that a certain hotel (not one you listed above) has his own thread on the asia thailand area and his hotel is frequented by many ISG members... Especially newbies as he does provide assistance for many members...

Sorry Dad, I tried, I really tried, but the complete and utter laziness of the newbie got to me. I mean, all this guy does is ask dumb questions. He can't be bothered to even read a few pages.

10 USD says you never see a FR from him about one of these places.

What's that got to do with anything? An older hotel can certainly be kept to the very highest standards. The Mandarin Oriental was built in the 19th century. And some of the most disreputable people I've ever met stay there - it only takes lots of money and a willingness to spread it around. And it's still regarded as one of the premier properties in the world.

LeFenix is not GF. Majestic Suites, CitiChic, and President Park definitely ARE GF.

"The room assigned was average, old and dated. Furniture was old, and the carpets stained from long overuse.Next, the housekeeping standards are very sloppy, and for 2 nights, they forgot to come to turn down the bed! On one day, the housekeeping came very late in the late afternoon! This only after I reminded them twice!"

"The overall decor is quite tired - although it must have been an impressive place once."

"For around the same amount you'd be much better off at the Oriental, the Penninsula or the Shangri La."

And I agree that the JW is a wornout old hotel. But if I want to be close to the action Its an average choice but far from a good value.

The JW is always a holy cow to some...

In any case there is a lift from the ground level that bypasses reception if you are concerned.

Staying in the grand mercure Bangkok in sukhumvit soi 22.

Did not have any problems bringing a girl in. Nobody stopped me, nobody asked for id card etc.

Hotel is very nice. Big room, bath with connected window to the room. Location is ok.

The girl just left.

Today they stopped me at the reception with the girl. Asked for her ID card and checked if I booked a single or doubleroom. Of course I booked double, so they said "thank you sir, good night".

I just asked the reception: if you book single they will charge extra fee (for double room).

So be smart, book double, which is in internet or by travel agent the same as single

Anyway I like this hotel, friendly clean, only I found the walls are not very soundproof. My neighbour did make some famliar noise (or better to say his girl.)

The fact that you found some stupid reviewers on Tripadvisor proves nothing. There are plenty of those dumb folks on that site. I've stayed at the Conrad. It's very slightly nicer than the JW Marriott, but significantly less conveniently located. And the service I got at the JW was even better than the excellent service I got at the Conrad.

I can't speak for countries outside SE Asia, but in this part of the world Tripadvisor's rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt. Some seem so out of whack that you have to wonder if interested parties are rigging the results.

Top ranked places tend to be expensive, e.g. Grand Millenium, Conrad, etc.
I would prefer to keep my left over cash for the girls instead of waste it on a pompous Hotel! :D
On the other hand we each tend to have a personal minimum acceptable standard that must be reached.
A good internet service is essential to me (preferrably free).
Good food is a definite plus.

I would like to see separate popularity list for different price brackets, or a value for money list.
Then I think that Livingstone's could easily more up the ranking for the 2k price bracket (inclusive of breakfast and internet and ++ charges)
