You have some points. I started mongering Brasil 5 years ago, but in Sao Paulo not Rio. Then, I could get an hour in the SP whiskerias for about 40% less than todays equivalents in Rio. This is my first trip to Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.
I followed advice from the board (thank you all) and so far no problems.
I got a 10-year, multiple entry business visa at the NYC consulate, it was a 4-day wait, I overheard someone asking the consular officials for some help because his travel plans changed, they seemed very helpful, so any Brazilian ideas of true reciprocity are failing, because they will never be able to match the U.S. visa process for anal-retentiveness and level of idiocy. Also as U.S. citizen you do not pay any extra for the business visa. They only glanced at my itinerary, then returned it, so I am guessing it is probably possible to get a visa with a doctored itinerary if you do not want to purchase the ticket first.
I followed advice in Bubba guide and once I arrived at GIG I went upstairs two floors to arrivals caught a yellow cab, it was R$40 to the hotel Mirador in Copa. Just for curiositty, I checked the pre-paid taxi stands that you see as you exit customs, they wanted $R90 so do not use the prepaid. I changed US$100 at the airport got like R$155.77, exchage rate 1.66, minus fee R$9.60. Later I got a withdrawal from an atm, fee was R$10.00 which my bank may later reimburse, exchange rate 1.77, so FYI, atm is a better deal.
I am staying at the Mirador, I booked it through Ipacom, US$90 a night before taxes, so roughly US$100/night total.
There is a seperate $R30/day charge for wireless internet. I called the reception and told them that I thought the service was free. After one or two exchanges, me not even really pushing, the receptionist said fine Mr. Wood we will not charge you. We will see in a few more days whether I am charged or not.
The room is supposed to be a double bed, they actually pushed two singles together and covered them with one blanket. So when I first came in the room, the bed looked like an aircraft carrier deck it was so broad, but there was this curious expanse of empty floor, like a little dancefloor, in front of it.
