I would respectfully disagree. If so, then there would also be as many Hatian men coming across the border. Those people in the affected area cannot even get water, food or transportation at this point in time to cross the border.
Neither PauP nor Petitionville are anywhere near the border. Study the local geography. Indeed it is a human tragedy and I will be putting some of my money where my mouth is. Hopefully others on this site will too. May God bless many many souls there and those that are going there to assist.
That's why I think it will take 2-3 weeks before the influx really hits. It will take a couple of weeks for there to be any sort of transportation available from PauP toward the DR. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the DR try to put some more clamps on the border than normally have existed. And I agree that some Haitian men will also try to cross - but they do not have the built-in means of generating cash within the DR that young adult females do.
And frankly, while I certainly would not advocate this, in fact it's more than a little bit repulsive to me, there is absolutely a market opportunity created by this tragedy at this instant in time for someone to come in there from the DR with 4WD vehicles and basically indenture carloads at a time of young, attractive Haitian women into working for them in the DR. The fact is, the catalyst for this sort of trafficking is invariably economic desperation, and a disaster like this is most assuredly the sort of thing that greatly increases economic desperation among those who are trafficked.

I'd have to agree with #2041. It will happen, but it will take a few weeks.
It's a awful situation and I want no part of taking advantage of it. Any ideas on what one can do to help? I'm hesitant about sending money, because I fear that little or none of it will actually make it to the people suffering.

I donated thru CARE's website. Pick one from cnn.com/impact. I believe at least 50% or more will make it.

Times are hard so half price might get you a nice BJ. Can you say Win/win!

So, how is Sosua doing these days? Would like to know... people seem to be "scared"? What about the Haitians in front of Classico's?? Business as usual? ;)
It's just sad that this has happened. 2010 already has a major incident now... :(
What about the Haitians in front of Classico's? Business as usual?
There were loads of them last night and it was raining. They still have to eat, earthquake or not.
But I saw many of them crying and hugging each other in groups as they exchanged what little information they had.
I took one home. In the middle of the night I was woken up by her sobbing, and she is one of the lucky ones who, though from P-a-P, had heard that her immediate family and her home were safe.
Imagine what the other P-a-P girls are feeling. The majority of them won't have a clue about their loved ones.
Let's hope no guys are stupid enough to try and take advantage or make thoughtless comments or attempts at humor. Apart from being very cruel that might be potentially dangerous. Some of these Haitians must be on a short fuse these days.
The "O" has already pledged $100 Million to Haiti, so if you pay taxes you've already donated.
You mean the Chinese have already donated. All that money is borrowed. Our taxes only pay interest on the debt.
