Spent about two weeks in PI as my first visit. First want to thank Freebiefan and Ploughman for meeting up with me and giving me some good advice/tips. I only ended up doing one pro and stuck with DIA and waitress/mall worker types. I'm the guy Freebiefan mentioned meeting and having difficulti with DIA girls. Well with trial and error and some tips from him things started rolling the next day to the point where I sent home two girls after meeting because the looks just weren't up to par compared to photos. I live in Manila but I’ve learned from bitter experience that the quality of dental care available in The Philippines is patchy at best. Not to say good dentists are not available but they are rare and reflect this in their high charges.

I always wait until I visit Thailand to get my dental repairs done. Quality and standards are much more uniformly high. I’m in Chiang Mai at the moment and have just completed a third lengthy and arduous session in the chair. Two crown replacements (botched Filipino work), 5 new veneers, some root canal work and various other bits and pieces. Total cost – $600.

All performed by a gorgeous doll of a lady dentist and her tasty assistant to take my mind off the discomfort. Was almost like fun – well almost;). Boots sure on the other foot having a young Thai bint putting her tools in my mouth:D.

True enough, but there are notable exceptions. I've got a dentist in Davao who belongs to the American Dental Association, worked for 15 years in Qatar, and is as good as any dentist I've been to in the US or France, and at prices that are maybe a third of what I would pay in those countries. There truly are some excellent dentists here, if you look hard enough.

My one and only dental experience in the Philippines was excellent. I wrote about it here or perhaps on WSG. About three years ago I had just arrived for my first visit to the Phils. It was to be five months. I'd left the states overdue for cleaning, and one of my dentist's hygienists -- part of a slick operation run a lot like a Goodyear tire shop -- insisted I had a cracked filling that called for a cap, which was going to set me back $600, even with insurance.

Within a few days of settling into an apartment building in Quezon City I noticed signboards for dentists on both the second and third floors. So I checked with the second floor shop: closed. Then I went to the third floor, and that shop was open. They told me I could get in for cleaning and xrays the next morning. I asked how much: 750 pesos for everything, about $15. The female dentist did the work, aided by an employee who handed her tools and also handled the appointment book, money, records, and so on. The dentist had done advanced study in the U.S. and had shared a practice for two years in San Diego with her sister. After reading the xrays she told me a cap was not needed; she could drill out the old filling and refill it.

Two days later I was in the chair again. The dentist gave me a smooth, virtually indistinguishable porcelain filling. Cost? 1600 pesos, $32. A far cry from the $600 cap that my old dentist's office was trying to sell me. And I have decided that "trying to sell me" is the correct metaphor here. Like Goodyear, Firestone and similar shops in the U.S. who always want to sell new radiator hoses to unsuspecting women motorists -- whose hoses they've accidentally on purpose cut with a knife while the car owner is out of sight.

That sounds like Garden Heights across from St. Lukes. Many doctors have offices on those floors as side practices. I have a few doc's I visit there and my ex step mom in law is a nurse who lives in the building.

Great place to do your one stop doctor shopping for all sorts of things. My dermatologist and a few others are located there and my last visit cost about 8 USD. However I get my bloodwork done at Makati Medical open 24 hours.

For dentistry I'd still visit BKK I guess but some joints in PI are not far behind. Also helps that I know a lot of girls from QC...

But I'm still looking for a 24 hour bloodwork joint that will email results...
