Just speaking off the cuff as I'm not well versed in Chinese Biotech companies, but my first instinct is that these companies are not the world's leading innovative companies. What I mean is that there are tons of profitable biotech companies, profitable companies in general for the matter. My first job out of undergrad was with a small 30 employee company that churned out over $50 million in revenue. But that company was hardly innovative, as in, they didn't push current tech to higher stratospheres. Want to know how they generated most of their revenue? By taking other well known approaches and making it more cost effective. The largest contract was with the a subsidiary of the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. All we did was take already proven, establish germ lines and produced cheap antibodies that were effective enough for mass use. These third world governments could have paid 5 x the price for a Johnson and Johnson product, but our company found a niche for profit taking.

Another analogy could be Wal-Mart. They don't innovate much of anything. They hardly provide revolutionary products. But they're gangbusters at generating profit. Even as Amazon takes over the world, Walmart will continue to command an enviable position in the profit-now market.

Maybe those companies you listed have some sector-changing products down their RnD pipelines, but a quick google search of a couple of them steered me into thinking that they are profit-taking companies whose primary goal is to take current technologies and provide products and services that maximize efficiency, minimize cost, while filling logistical / supply chain voids. Who believes that China isn't a capitalist economy! Anyway, I would like to see what shares of those companies' revenue goes back into Research and Development. And by that I mean the pure idea of RnD, not the industrial engineering variety.

I will preemptively admit that my hunch is influenced by my opinion of stereotypical Chinese culture: practical and risk averse.
