Hello,
This lovely little spinner, Jeni, claims to be serious. I hope she is, but experience that thaught me how semi-pregapos minds works.
So before investing more time in her, she is very pretty and lovely, I wonder if you guys know her. She likes Cafe del Mar.
Personally I don't mind if she is a semi-pro, but I'm really into her so I need to know which cards she are playing with.

First I am sorry if my post was a bit harsh, but I firmly believe what I wrote.
The reason is that we are speaking about the [u]El Centro and Bocagrande[/u] In Cartagena, not Colombia in general, not even Cartagena in general.
Wherever and whenever you go there. 24h / 24h inside the Walls or in Bocagrande, the risk to be robbed is minimal, certainly not higher than downtown Manhattan.
It is very lovely place, plenty of police patrolling the streets especially night time. I repeat: relax and enjoy.
On the other hand, as you say, I recommend the tourists, especially if new to the place, to avoid going nighttime around Getsemani or outside the walls, although the safety there significantly improved just in the last 5 years. I recommend the same tourists to avoid going walking outside of those central areas even at daytime.

I believe I have been more in danger in East St. Louis night time (and I was not walking, I just passed by car) , or in New Orleans, or when I walked a bit off track in Washington DC behind Capitol Hill without being very informed about the neighborhood, then in Santa Fe Bogota or in Medellin at night or in Cartagena outside the centro. USA can be definitely more dangerous than 99% Europe.
Every single major city in the world has its good and bad areas, the key is to do your research and know what places to avoid, its not brain surgery. In Colombia as rule of thumb I bring my "A Game" street smarts and trust nobody. The cops? Thats laughable coming from a guy who has been already shaken down 2 times for no apparent reason during random car and taxi searches.

Nothing bad happened to me personally but I have heard more stories of mishaps such as this in MDE. Cabbies are also in general more friendly in CTG than in MDE.
On a side note, the safest place for a passport is in your room. I have no idea why people carry passports on them. If you feel for a need to have an I'd on you, keep a copy.

I've also heard that a color photocopy can help, though fortunately I've kept out of the hands of the police, so can't say whether this is true or not.
I'd rather deal with a policeman who is not happy with my photo copy then a nightmare trip to the BOG embassy.

I've got a couple of expired passports and I always bring one with me when I travel overseas. I leave the current one at the hotel and carry the expired one with me for identification. I was stopped once by a police officer and showed him my expired passport. The officer looked at it. He didn't seem to notice the hole or the expiration date. He just looked at my picture to make sure it matched me and that I was a US citizen and let me go. I think carrying an expired US passport as proof-of-identification is better than a photocopy of a current passport.

Why not just make a good lazer copy of your passport and laminate it like I do, it looks completely official to the naked eye and I have shown it to police who accepted it looked at it and given it back to me probably thinking it was the real thing for all they know, who knows. I use it at the markets, clubs, malls with no problems and best of all your passport stays where its suppose to be, in the safe.

I guess that's another benefit of getting old, hahaha.
