Yes, you are right in thinking that it will be a truly miserable time to come to Riga.

I was just reading about it in the English language newspaper here and thought to myself that this is a good time for me to go out of the country for a few days as there will be zero business happening.

I am imagining that it will be the same as when George Bush visited here last year.

The city was at a standstill and so all of the locals that could disappeared into the country for that period. Because there were so few people around, a lot of clubs, restaurants and other businesses closed down for the duration.

All of the 4* and 5* hotels will be fully booked already (and good 3* hotels as well). I remember that during Bush's visit, the Hotel Latvija (where the CIA was based) was basically locked down. Anyone coming in or out hat to go through airport style X-ray machines and get completely searched as well as an ID check.

There's no way that any girl would want to put herself through such checks.

So I would avoid coming here then like the plague.

Fortunately 28-29 November is a Wednesday and Thursday which won't be quite as bad as Bush's visit, which was on a Friday I seem to remember.

Have you booked accommodation yet? As I said, it might be difficult to find high quality rooms while the Summit is going on (I always advise people to book apartments rather than hotels in any case though).

I think that you should be fine for the first few few days, which fortunately are going to be the best days - Wednesday through Sunday.

I think that the chaos will start the day before the Summit, Monday 27th, so it should only affect the last 24 hours of your trip.

My advice would be to get out of Riga for that last 24 hours, to either Jurmala or Sigulda, depending upon what kind of things you like to do on holiday.

If you are stuck for acomodation on the last night, my girlfriend has a small but fully refurbished studio apartment in Jurmala which she rents for just 25 Lats/night. It's not in the centre though, so you'd either need to rent a car, be ready for a 30 min walk to the station or to use the minibus service.

If you were planning on going to Sigulda anyway, then your final day would be the day to do it. If it's snowing by then (I hope not!) then the bobsledding is supposed to be great if you are into those types of things.

Maybe things have changed, but up to a year ago Okinawa was something totally different from the classic massage salons in Riga.
More similar to a brothel, it had a small bar where you can sit and drink with the girls. You pick-up your favorite and pay the fee allegedly "for the massage". You move then to a place next door, a sort of small apartment with a central sofa area and a few bedrooms on the sides. After 5 minutes of massage the girl will start negotiating the extra price. At the time it was 30LVL, I doubt it is still the same today.

While in Okinawa you go for sex, in all the other massage establishments there is only a lucky chance to get something more than an HJ. It is down to the girl to offer (or accept) the extra.
