Surcharge for winter tires have been a popular ripoff in the past. Now that winter tires are legally required a customer challenged this in court and did win the case. Charging for (legally required) winter tires is like charging extra for brakes and rear mirror.
Last time, it wasn't the same case with my rental. At the end of January, I rented a car from Avis Basic. 22 Euro / day. It was 3 degree Celcius in the daytime, but minus 7 sometimes during late night, but there were not snows on the roads. The lady in counter gave me a car fitted with winter tyres. I asked if there is a surcharge of extra for winter tyres, she says "nein". Previously, I always asked to sign a paper if I don't want winter tires or asked for an extra 13 Euro / daily, and last time was last December 2010. So maybe, something changed in Avis, if the law says all cars have to be fitted with winter tyres between October and March, maybe they are not any more, able to handle a car fitted with summer and maybe they can't charge any more for the winter tyres (even they have this option as an extra on your online quotation).
Also I get upgraded every time from a 1. 1L or 1. 2L small car to a 1. 6L mid size car too for some reason I cannot fathom. I still pay the price for the small car.

Avis rentals
It may also be that you rent a lot from them. I've gotten some pretty sweet upgrades (C to E class, etc.) just because they get a lot of my company's business.

Which company are you renting from, I've just rented from Hertz last week and Winter tyres are free of charge. I had a choice to get upgraded to a Ford 1, 6L SW for free, but I didn't like the SW, so I got a BMW 3 with a small extra fee.

Thruth is that winter tires are legally required, but only in sommer!
@Jack42: Je kunt hier een bericht 1000 maal of 2000 posten, it does not make any difference, men leest niet of men is te dom om het te begrijpen, good point my dear Friend Jack42!

I book with Hertz. Occassionally Avis, and never Sixt or Europcar. I have no company account. This is all on personal account. In the beginning I got what I paid for but now in the winter I can getting some nice mid sized cars.

More on the rental from Hertz.
Anyone ever tried to take the car back when the agency is closed for the night?
Next time I fly back home I should be dropping the car back at Frankfurt Hahn at about 5 in morning. No issues? Hopefully I won't be over charged if the make up fictional stuff.
All the rental car agency's use the same key drop box. Its about 100 feet from where you return your car. Follow the signs for Hertz, park the car and lock it up. Then as your walking towards the elevators you'll see what looks like a newpaper box. You pull out the slot, put in your car key and your agreement booklet and slide it back in. The keys and book will drop into the box.

As it will be dark at 5 am, you would need a camera with half decent flash as opposed to a phone camera

Posting assistance?
Hi. I'm a complete beginner with computers, except to use the internet. I tried to post on the Palace thread (worked on it a long time) , but it disappeared when I clicked on 'preview report'. I tried a brief test post that was posted. So I again spent a long time recreating the lost post, clicked on 'add report', and it disappeared, replaced by a notice that I was not logged in, which I was. Jackson has not been able to help. I use a mac. Can anyone help? I really would like to share my Palace experience.

That is after a certain amount of time in the posting field you are automatically signed out. Not sure exactly why this is so. Best thing to do with longer reports is to write them in a word processing program (eg. word) and then when ready open the posting field, copy, paste, and post.

Agree with Angus.
That you should write and play with it on TextEdit or Pages first. Another thing, when you are siging on, click on the box to Remember Me, just below where you put your user name etc. It will allow you to stay on longer, even if you are not active. When you sign out, any cookie is removed and you will have to re-check the box the next time you sign in.
Welcome aboard.
Myr.

Breadman and Henio, thanks for the advices.
Will definitely take pictures of the car, did not think about that.
One more doubt. Anyone in the know regarding the opening times at the gas station down the road from Hahn?
Same problem, I will have to fill the tank at about 5 am.
Can't wait for my next Frankfurt trip!
