In the last 10 years, I don't remember a terma girl ever saying she was living in or near Baja. I'm sure there are some, but I'm skeptical that the business model includes girls coming from the termas. In fact, I don't think Help attracted that many terma girls, especially on the same days they worked.

The Centro termas close relatively early, so maybe they would come out there. I still doubt it.

I'm hopeful that the new place works because it is near the godforsaken shoot-out corral our company forces us to stay in, but, if Copa is turning up the political heat against Help-type places, I would imagine that Barra will be a furnace.

Off to Buzios this weekend. Anybody been? Worth the drive?

Boate Subsolo / ex-Subway (Centro - Av. Rio Branco, 14 - Subsolo), just over Av. Pres Vargas. Close to a bunch of Termas like T31, MV 30, etc.

For those of you that miss Help there is a poor substitute in centro. A lot of the centro terma girls go there after close. Opens around 11.30 pm or so. I have been there 2 or 3 times, there is not really a cover, just a consumption which isn't much. Need to be very careful with the waiters, they will try and rip you off as much as possible. My rule is when I go to a new place I drink beer or coke and make sure the bill can't be run up too much. Anyway, girls will usually take R$80 or so, thats what the Brazilian guys will get, they will of course start at R$200 os do. Most go to the motel Sao Bento accross the street which is R$30 or so, depending on what you want. It is pretty crappy but ok. There are no rooms on the premise. You can take a girl back to copacabana for the night of course, although I don't.

Maybe 50 girls on a decent night, much closer than Barra. Be careful in this area at night, definitely cab it, it is crack city after 11.00pm. Open Mon- Friday although do not go Monday, it is dead!

Good place to get down and dirty in Rio De Janeiro............

There is a misconception of distances to Barra. According to Google maps Posto 5 Copa to Subsolo is 14.6km 22mins. Posto 5 to Av Pepe Barra is 16km 23mins....

I just did the same stat and got slightly different stats. All I know is that a cab from centro to Copa is about R$22 at night, a cab back from barra runs easy R$40+

Good point but I'm not saying barra is close to copa, but it is not "way further." as people try to say. The other thing to realize is that Barra is huge, It could cost you R30 from one side of Barra to the other. Av Pepe, however, is the closest point to Zona Sul.

Paris cafe, which is a great termas, in Recreio, is a further 18km from Av. Pepe.

Yes exactly, the other end of Barra is friggin miles away. I got a cab back from Paris Cafe one night about 3 years ago, cost about R$75, probably more like R$90 now! Anyone that is thinking of living down there would really need to buy a car, very spread out like American type beach suburbs!

With all due respect, going anywhere in Rio when the traffic is up is unpredictable. I once spent 40 minutes in a taxi and didn't make it from Cantagalo station to Siquiero Campos. So, let's set that aside for a moment.

I frequently go from near Arpoador to near Downtown in Barra in morning rush hour. It takes about 30 minutes and costs about R25. It varies, but this is the expected value. So that is about what you would expect to this new venue i guess in moderate traffic.

Now, a rainy Friday afternoon, all bets are off. One hour would not be unusual. I try to get out of Barra by 2-3 PM if at all possible. Even then, traffic is heavy. Late at night it is probably 15 - 20 minutes, no big deal. So, with my limited knowledge of Rio, I would say pick your times carefully.'

But to put it in perspective, VM is not close to Zona Sul either. It can easily take an hour to get there. I have taken the Barra Express to Barra (now leaves from Prc Gen Osorio) and I will bet it is faster to get to Barra in moderate traffic than it is to get to VM by bus.

Last time I timed it, Zona Sul to VM using metro + walking was about an hour. Quite a hike.

Number one rule in Rio -- as far as I am concerned -- is stay out of traffic. So if you want to do centro, stay down there. Likewise for ZS. Stay in Barra only if you can't avoid it!

Rent a Dune Buggy. It is a great way to get around since the beaches and downtown are pretty spread out.
