1) There have been a lot of posts on cell phones. I am from Canada so AT&T and Verizon do not exist here. Can I just buy a cheap phone down there and add minutes? I am not sure what an unlocked phone or a sim card is.

2) I want to rent a car for my trip as I want to take some day trips and do a lot of golfing. Where is the best place to rent a car? Some reports say online is a rip-off. Some say the POP airport, and there are a few other ideas (mind you I am a first timer). Any suggestions on the best and easiest deal for a newbie? I have also read that you should take maximum insurance regardless of what you have at home or with your Visa card?

Any help on these two subjects would be appreciated. Also, if there are any experienced mongers down there on these dates I would like to meet up and share some stories and info.[/QUOTE]

I usually rent from Alamo and make the reservations online before I go. Alamo requires you make the reservations online at least 24 hours before you will pick up the car. I usually use a coupon code to save about 50 dollars on the car. My Mastercard credit card provides coverage if the car is stolen or damaged. With Alamo online you can choose third party liability insurance for an extra $5 dollars per day. You can also choose tire and windshield protection for $3.75 per day. Collision damage/theft protection is $19.95 per day. You should check with your credit card company whether they provide coverage for car rentals. I don't know much about Visa cards. If your Visa card provides coverage for Collision damage/theft protection then there is NO need to pay the rental company an extra $19.95 per day for that coverage.

Chevy spark with alamo from April 7 to April 14 would be $150 dollars. If you choose third party liability and glass/windshield protection the price would be $212. A slightly bigger car, the chevy aveo would cost $226. I never have had problems with Alamo. Print out a copy of the online reservations and bring it with you, in case they try to charge you more.

Glass/windshield insurance you may not need. I have gotten a few flat tires in dom rep. Glass depends, I know of when one crazy chica threw a presidente bottle at a car window, but it didn't break the window.

I would definitely pay for the third party liability insurance, in case someone is injured by your car.

If you have an old cell phone in your house that you no longer use, you can bring it to Dom Rep. Most cell phone shops in DR are able to unlock most cell phones. From what I know, two basic types of cell phone signals, GSM and CDMA. If the cell phone shop unlocks your phone, they will be able to tell you which Cell phone company to use in the Dom Rep with that phone. Orange and Claro are the two biggest cell phone companies in the Dom Rep.

Most shops charge around 20 dollars to unlock a cell phone. Once your phone is unlocked, the cell phone shop will get a dominican phone number for your cell, usually a 809 or 829 area code.

Thereafter to add minutes you buy Claro or orange cards (60 pesos, 100 pesos, 250 pesos, 500 pesos). You scratch off part of the back of the card to reveal a 10 digit code. For Claro you dial 1133 and press send, you will hear a recorded message asking you to put in the 10 digit code from the back of the card. You enter the code from the back of the card and thereafter minutes will be added to your dominican cell phone.

You can a buy a Claro cell phone in Dom Rep for 495 pesos, less than 15 dollars. I did that my last trip, only problem is that it is a ZTE brand cell phone, which I hate, small screen size and I could not change the sound settings. I have in the past bought a 20 dollar verizon samsung camera phone at walmart which I had unlocked in Dom Rep. That 20 dollar Samsung phone is 10 times better than the ZTE.

Another member recommended Adventure rent a car in Dom Rep.

Wise words. I have seen this a thousand times. When I was younger I just did not want to believe it but today I have come to the realization that women LOVE MONEY. No if and or buts about it. They seldom understand how influenced they are by it. Also when many women feel as if they can not get anything else of value from you, suddenly that love that she spoke about when you guys were first together vanishes and she is out the door. It's your money and feelings do what you want to with them . like you I have been to Thailand many times and love it , but the beaches and the long journey make me want to change up.Love Brazil and Colombia but the prices could be better. DR is closer and cheaper. I have been traveling overseas since I was 29 years old and I'm 48 now .

I love the cultures and beaches , the women got old after the second visit , because it wasn't something I was not getting at home, yes the beauty and numbers were better , but sex is sex .

I would be suspicious of any chica that demands a monthly western union payment. Helping out a chica you like, occasionally with some money, I don't see a problem.

There are guys here in the States who spend 10,000 dollars on a high priced escort for 24 hours.

There are some scamming chicas in the Dom Rep, but usually within a short period of time you can discover who they are.

As another member said, Love shouldn't cost a thing. But love is a two way street (marriage, fidelity and living together to me would exhibit love). As much as I like some of these chicas, I am not ready to marry them and have them live with me and totally stop mongering, so it is totally understandable to me if they look for other guys with whom they can do the whole family thing.

As with any financial matters do your due diligence before investing. There are many things a guy can do to check out a chica, if a guy is suspicious (All fair in love and war).

As for the car I am going to book online as that is pretty cheap as well - except that I want an SUV.

I would like to try and add some value to this fourm if I can. I called my insurance company here in Canada and for $14 they added a international over ride to my house insurance for the month of April. This includes rental cars outside of North America. $1,000,000 combined personal and 3rd party insurance on rental cars. It sure beats $35 / day from the rental car company and I have total piece of mind with my own insurance company and a million in coverage. Just a tip if mongering anywhere - call your insurance company and get them to insure your rental vehicle.

Younger chicas with older guys only happens in the Dom Rep? I don't think so. I went to a very small, very expensive liberal arts college, mostly smart and rich kids went there (I was smart but not rich). I saw 50 year old white professors (and older) divorce their 50 year old wives and marry 20 year old students. Those females were white American and rich. Somehow the white, rich parents of those females couldn't stop their 20 year old daughters from marrying some 50+ aged guy, or maybe they weren't bothered by it, I don't know.

No country in this world is perfect, I take the good with the bad (not all Dominicans are scum, neither are all of them angels). You are free to write how you feel about Dominicans and I am free to respectfully disagree with you.

I think what is more important is to appreciate that Dominicans see matrimony and relationships in a more transactional way that Americans do.

Actually it was that way too in Anglo Saxon circles until Jane Austen, a fairly plain, though very intelligent woman who turned down a proposal of marriage from an ugly millionaire, started the idea that there had to be romantic love as well as money involved.

Be that as it may, Americans tend to think that love and sex have to be connected, but Dominicans don't share that cultural heritage and are much less sentimental about love and marriage.

So if the father sees you as a good catch, it is because he thinks you will be a good economic asset to the family.

Actually I think their attitude to sex is probably more healthy.

Many times when I have been in the Dominican Republic I would have discussions with expats and many would say that they have a love-hate relationship with DR. When I was in Boca Chica years ago one of the hotel owners said this. When I was in Sosua last month the cook at Passions made the same comment. I feel the same way. There are things about the country that I love and some things I really hate. I've been burned but at the same time I've met some great women. I mostly date Dominicans while at the same time I am from the Caribbean. Cuba and Puerto Rico might be the wings but the body is Dominican! Without the body you cannot have much of a bird. Historically, the three nations share a common cultural link. Just read some history. Rebel Monger and Jaosousa both have valid points. I guess Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Dominicans sometimes don't get along but on other occasions they do. Jaosousa, I have never heard of that analogy of the bird that you mentioned but I am sure that my analogy is more accurate. As for your previous posts, Jaosousa, you have said some great things and it is a learning experience. You have even corrected me on one or two points (good job). Thanks guys.

it's the Cubans, Mexicans and PR's in the US that don't particularly get along. Those tensions don't exist in the countries themselves.
The US tensions exist for a variety of reasons, but basically the Cubans stateside come from the rich and middle classes that fled Cuba, and are far better educated and for the most part, are self made in the US.

They look down on Mexicans, who tend to be very poor and uneducated peasants and of course the PR's who are stateside, many are on US welfare, adapt urban thug culture and this doesn't sit well with the Cubans either, despite the cultural similarities otherwise. Cubans will also make fun of the way the PR's pronounce their r's like l's.

I don't look for, or need, a happy ending here, even though she would marry me at the drop of a hat. Our relationship could never survive outside the DR and I know that.

Some guys have said the Dominicans are hard working and I can attest to that. This chica has to come a long way, a full days bus ride where she insists on meeting me at the airport and taking me there when I leave. She has to get a lot of family and school shit together and make herself pretty (I send her money for hair and nail do) and well dressed, and totally devoted to me for the whole week, 24/7

I don't know about you guys, but I never saw that kind of dedication in all my relationships. I'm in business so I'm just in awe of the logistics she goes through to make it all perfect, given the limited resources she has to work with, but it seemds to come naturally to her.

I do encourage (send) send her home to her local family in the afternnoons where she takes cares of family matters, and laundry (including mine) so's I can sniff around and take in the rest of what Sosua has to offer, but I'm always glad to see that smiling face show up later wherever I happen to be.

I think you guys get the backgroud picture now, so I won't bore you all anymore with what I'm beginning to feel is self-indulgent shit.

I will let you know with cut to the chase updates on how its going, but one thing be sure, I will always be completely honest with you. I have a relatively short fuse, and when things start falling apart you will be the first to know how and why.

I hope some good may come from my experience to any guy who has ever seriously considered a long term relationship down there.
