I would suggest that you ask your Insurance company to fax or email you a copy of the declaration page for the override insurance, that includes the policy number and dates of coverage and that you bring that page with you to the Dom Rep and leave it in the glove box of the car. In case you have an accident you will have something to show the police and it could keep the police from putting you in jail.

I spoke to another member recently and he returned a car rental with a damaged tire that could not be repaired and the car rental company wanted to charge him 3,000 pesos (83 dollars) for a new tire. I destroyed a tire on an Avis van one time and the folks at Avis wanted to charge me 250 dollars for a new tire. If you rent with alamo/national it might be worth it to pay the $3.75 per day for glass and tire insurance.

You will probably use a credit card to rent the the car, they will put a $1,000 hold on your credit card. Also check your credit card account regularly after you use it in the Dom Rep, lots of fraud with credit cards in the Dom Rep.

If you rent from Alamo/National send me a PM, and I'll send you the name of the chica who I know who works at Alamo, she usually works the counter at the airport in Puerto Plata.

You can burn compact discs with music on your home computer to listen to in the car, the alamo rentals all have cd players.

You may want to post a question on the Puerto Plata thread asking for the location of a codetel/claro or Orange shop where you can buy a cell phone. I believe your first night will be in BB, so you may want a cell phone shop near BB to buy a cell your first day.

I usually bring with me a 10 dollar corded hands free device to use with the cell, while I am in the car, the police are generally few and far between in Dom Rep, they can pull you over for talking on the cell if you are not using a hands free device, usually best not to give them an excuse to try and shake you down for money. Driving in Puerto Plata there will be many 125 cc motorcycles around you, change lanes and make turns cautiously. Pedestrians and the guys driving the motorcycles usually watch out for larger motor vehicles (always amazes me that there are not more accidents with all the hustle and bustle going on). Keep loose coins in the car, just about always some person will come and wash your windshield, whether you want them to or not, you can give them a few pesos (2 pesos or 5 pesos, depending what coins you have).

The drive from Puerto Plata city (once you are outside the city) to Sosua is easy.

Full size SUV that are common in the Dominican Republic are the Toyota Pajaro (pajaro supposedly also means homosexual) and Mitsubishi Montero. About 4 years ago I traveled with three other other guys and we rented a nissan x-trail from Alamo which was a smallish SUV.

Thanks. A Puerto Rican guy I know told me the bird analogy and he would call Dominicans, DUMBminicans (Dumbies). The Dominicans I know in New York would reply to the Puero Rican, that Dominicans had an independent country and were free from another country, unlike Puerto Rico.

If that was the case then Buster Douglas should have never beaten Tyson or Ali beating George Forman when he was pass his prime. To me I take my chances with a female in DR then in the states. It probably won’t workout with the honey in the long run but you can be sure to get your moneys worth and at a cheaper cost then at home.

My godfather is prime example. He’s 63 and his girl is 29. He sets her up in an apartment in Santiago. They’ve been together for 2yrs and met the family, etc. etc. He comes to DR 4 times a year for about a month each time. Now to make a long story short he broke up with her a couple months back and that was because of the classic reasons.

She would have family live with her while my godfather wasn’t there. He didn’t know (or should I say didn’t want to know) what she was doing while he’s away. She would increasingly ask him for money. It sounds like what we would call a sucker.

BUT he sat down with me, broke down the cost of everything (apartment, how much money he sent her monthly, etc) told me how every time he came to DR she would be attentive to his EVERY need all the way down to cutting and polishing his toes and concluded that even the BEST female from the states wasn’t going to pamper him like that (or look that good) and it would’ve cost him even more money even though the female from the states is not a hoe.

So like a grown man he moved on, somber because it didn’t end the way he wanted but happy about the value, the attention and loved he received and wiser.
