Medellin Reports

Hi Justafool,

I have been going to all those centro bars, Conejitas, Las Americas, Maracaibo and Ejecutiva, for 3-4 years. All the door men are like that and I don´t even look "gringo", just a bit like an upperty class Colombian. They ask anybody that looks like they have money. They are a pest, specially the bar tenders at Barra Ejecutiva. I finally got tired of going to those bars precisely for that reason. I will say that the "Conejita" doormen are not as bad, but the other 3 are deplorable.

You will not be harrassed at Fase ll, San Diego and Luna Lunera. They are more expensive, but the quality of girls is much better and you don´t have to put up with the asshole doormen. I complaint once to one of the managers at Maracaibo, and even to the doormen themselves, and told them that all they are doing is chasing away potential customers, but they are too stupid to understand or care. They just see a gringo, or anybody that looks like he´s well to do, like a personal Mac machine, or Public Assistance worker.

It was for him to get that little more out of me. When I went back in Feb. He again said the same and I replied, ¨friend, it is your turn to buy¨.

I have not been inside the bar since Feb. And do not plan on returning but I do pass the bar most every day in El Centro and I am still hustled by that security guard.

However, we have BOTH have had this what I believe is a "Cultural" situation happen to us and we ALWAYS have our guard up against this practice of looking at us Americans as we have a money tree in our back yards and we "Owe" them something for just getting to know us. After all aren't we Americans all rich? LOL!

Example: I use to use a driver to pick me up from the airport. The LAST time I used him is when he asked me for a Bottle of Expensive Whiskey FOR free and he was serious! Then he saw me in Medellin and was confused why I didn't call him and started to ask me if I could get him a laptop. Blah blah blah. Next example: A guy I know wanted me to bring him a blackberry, I told him the cost up front and when I brought it he wanted to make payments as he didn't have the money!

This is incidents of many attempts (failed) that I have experienced. Both my buddy and I have learned our lessons and NEVER bring SHIT for anyone especially if they ask! Its unfortunate but this is the "Norm" in Medellin not the "Minority". Which includes door men, security at clubs, hookers, friends etc. Scheesh On my last trip a Airport Police Officer (that I always see) asked me to bring him also something from the states. However, getting paid is a whole another issue!

Needless to say, I declined. Watch out for her.

I am assuming they have american style strip clubs there, but are the girls for take out or take in? I have read many posts here, and still cant get a handle on where to go. Is there a Bwana Dik type guide for Medellin because I want my first time to be stress free.

Weather has been extremely shitty the past 5-6 months here in Medellin. The rainy season should be OVER but it's still here. And it's the coldest it's ever been. Anyone know why? I heard it's going to stay like this until at least March. Argh

I think as a first timer you will have least amount of hassle and the company of many other mongers who will be able to help you.

i struggle a bit with the dress code, at heart i'm a velcro sneaker bluejean monger. but since i've decided to pay the extra fee for a carry-on, i might as well carry on some nice clothes. the difference between black slacks, or even black jeans, and some nice slip-on black shoes, and my velcro sneakers, is a lot from an appearance point of view, but very little extra trouble for me. so that's the way i'm going from now on. i think my brother american travelers should consider it also, add to the ambience and not detract.

The summer is "over" this year in Medellin, expect all the remaining months, and like you said until next March to be ....rainy !

Start with World traveller's list in the "Medellin lists" sub-forum and cross reference that with one of the map links he posted. I am not expert (just trying to be helpful) but my impression, after doing what I suggested you do, is that the venues are spread out but manageable with taxis and metro.

Sometimes, small gifts or small amounts of cash can be useful in keeping some helpful, competent people in your orbit, but you'll need a good sense of which people are the humble/helpful types and which are the ones that talk a lot of crap but hardly ever deliver.

And keep the gifts/cash outlays small as bigger amounts will NOT guarantee loyalty or better service or friendship or whatever; if anything, just the opposite, it tempts people to try to get/scam even more from you!

Here's a few things to keep in mind when dealing with people asking for tips, gifts, favors:

1) The problem with being a generous nice guy in this country is that people will disappoint you or flake out on you sooner or later.

2) This is a very two-faced yet polite culture. Flat-out denials and refusals are usually not done here. So you might get static from people if the first word out of your mouth is NO! :) There's a whole passive-aggressive shtick involved when turning requests down.

So keep in mind saying no to people in their face or calling them directly on their bs will do you no favors here. It's not like they're ever going to admit that a gringo is right, so don't waste your time and energy.

3) But it also works the other way in your favor! They will almost never challenge you directly to your face so you can get away with all kinds of half-assed excuses as to why you can't tip them right now, or buy whatever it is they want you to buy. Use their bs stories on THEM before they use them on you!

I remember the nonsense started right from the very first night out in Colombia. I was in some club in Cali, and I remember holding on to the expensive bottle of rum that was ordered because I already sensed the other half of the group was going to flake on paying their fair share. They soon left in a huff, although they did grab a bottle of the cheaper aguardiente before they went off.

Just take it all in stride; try to treat it like a fun game. It can actually be entertaining when you see them realize you're not going to stand for their nonsense, and usually no harsh words or scene is necessary. On the contrary, that's bound to make the situation worse, and actually make your position weaker. Don't be afraid to call their bluff, but do it tactfully to control the situation.

2 sunny seasons in Medellin, Jan Feb and March, also July Aug and Sept.

2 rainy seasons in Medellin, April, May and June, Oct November and Dec.

Both seasons can overlap by months or can miss out altogether. I am asked repeatedly by guests what is the weather going to be, now Im like the Colombians, I just shrug my shoulders.

Alejita (aka Alejandra) is one of the sweetest girls you can get with. She's a Casa Blanca regular. She, as well as many other Casa Blanca girls, can be found on RL. Not sure what you feel she was hustling you about though.

The best discos in Poblado are not in Parque Lleras. So I would say if you had wanted to party, then you missed out by not joining them. Different situation of course if you just wanted to eat.

Still, you were there and I wasn't, so it is your opinion that she should be one "to watch out for". I'd say the same thing to others but for a different reason.

el centro has a number of strip clubs as well as most of the lower priced massage parlors (and a few upscale ones). it also has a small street walker area, but not that's for the feint of heart. the massage parlors offer the cheapest prices for sex but aren't everyone's cup of tea. they are also rep001tered and one needs a map (rtf). the centro strip clubs are cheaper and skankier than some others, but there are diamonds to be had. fs is always available. mostly it's done on site, but take out can be arranged.

mayorista is the place most foreign mongers go for sws. it is relatively safe with a large diversity of girls from 1's to 9's. prices are low, there are no strip clubs, but you can hang out at a street table having a beer and watching the talent go by. frank casio is the mayorista expert on this board.

in other parts of town you will find some upscale (and expensive) establishments like the strip club fase dos and the massage parlor loutron's. it all depends on what you like. some mongers find their girls through web sites like romancelatina, others through drivers or apartment owners. from what i can tell, there isn't much of an outcall escort scene. girlfriend for a week would be the expensive exception to this rule.

for a first time visitor who wants to try a bit of everything i highly recommend staying at casa blanca i or ii (formerly medellin mansion). a select group of girls hangs out there and are available, but more importantly the staff, guests and owners will hook you up with whatever you need from tours of the massage parlors to calls for specific girls. i hate to promote it (because it's overbooked as things are and i can never get in), but unless you know exactly what you want it is the best place to start, and pretty much the only place (except maybe frank's) if you don't speak spanish.
