Andy Abs does well not to make a deroratory comment about the American Army, then adds an irrelevant parachute comment. Were it not for the American Army, he'd most likely be writing and speaking German.
Ignorant comment. The RAF prevented the invasion of the UK by defeating the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. The US wasn't even in the war at that point and couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag when the war started.
Oh, and as a US Army veteran, I'll take the Paras over a freaking US Army MP any day.

ok, then. merging topics...the US military are responsible for the very visible prostitution industry in LOS. (Just ask any Thai)...Run with that one, gentlemen. :)
Lt BTW, the bill (paid by the custom officials) was over 40, 000 Baht.
Very interesting post Khunyai, made even more interesting by the fact that thai customs officials obviously "earn" enough money in their job, to be able to drop 40,000 Bt for a night of fun. ;)
O.K. but most people English speakers would understand that I meant the Nic from years ago (who was actually even younger of course). Its just an unfortunate expression.
I understood what you meant, I was just making a joke (obviously, I failed). LOL
the US military are responsible for the very visible prostitution industry in LOS. (Just ask any Thai)...
Well, OTH, that was an obvious one. And if I may add, ask any thai about All the illnesses of LOS and he will most likely point fingers in the direction of a Farang.
WE are why Thailand is such a mess.

Not that strange, the Thai Govt. is very generous to entertaining foreigners, they use any excuse to take folks out and often there the the formal parties then the informal parties afterwards.

Hi OTH,
I may be mistaken. But was it not the French colonial army fighting in Vietnam before the Americans that helped set the foundation to Thailand's beautiful nightlife? I would agree the Americans set it in stone. My father who was over in '65 said that it was not in your face as much as it was for his 2nd tour in '69. So maybe the 'very visible' part came as a marketing racket, as allot of US service men went to the Philippines for R&R in the beginning of the war, I think thats how my Uncle meet his wife.
Slylock
(So either way we have the French and Americans to thank for our wonderful Thai nightlife, and for that they will have my humble thanks! lol [WW2, lets not forget the pacific campaign, the US did it alone except for Burma and Malaysia!])

Drama Queens
Btw, the Russians played a very major role in Second world War events and they didn't behave like a bunch of drama queens ;).

No, Stalin just had them all shot and any one else that dared not meet HIS objectives regardless of cost.

Absolutely no doubt that the US Military (and farang civilians too) was a major contributing factor in the Thai prostitution business. Other important contributing factors include Thai mens' failure to adequately provide for their wives, or ex-wives as is so often the case, and the Thai Government's failure to enforce in any way child-support from these irresponsible assholes who create kids then move on the the next ignorant girl to create another one, etc, etc. Also, a society which generally treats women as second-class citizens trickling right down to marriage where Thai men often beat their women and drive them into seeking perhaps more comfortable (though not in all cases) and lucrative relationships with other nationalities.
How many girls are working to raise kids as a single-parent, and are sending money home to mom, who has been deserted by dad? Hmmm?
Let's not heap the whole mess onto the backs of the US Military please.

French Navy
To Easy 2007,
For that reason, you won't see me running down the French Navy. OK?

I always thought that is were the Thais themselves that are "the cause" of all this great things offered in Thailand.

Customs Officials
Reference #5242 1Ball
Obviously, these were not your average Customs Officals, they were the top Echelon officals in Thailand. When they visited us in the USA, we treated them likewise. Works that way here.

You are 100% right, my much older brother. Of course, we don't know what our friend Khunyai does for a living, and was it business or pleasure.
Now, if these guys were Gov't officials who are involved in marketing, or investments with foreigners, and they were closing a deal on a new 50 million dollar shoe factory, of course, it all makes sense. But these guys work for customs. Why would they entertain a foreigner to the tune of 40,000 bt. Maybe I am just naive. But I work in Indonesia, and I know how bribes work. (I am not at all suggesting Khunyai gave them bribes, just that these guys might have had a good week, and had some cash to blow).
Gamahucher,
You are mis-informed. I spent 4 years with NATO, and I can tell you first-hand that there is a great mutual respect and friendship between the British and American military. Don't know what you've been reading, but I have been there and done that so shovel your drivel elsewhere please.
Not misinformed at all. I spent 22 years in the British Army and was just telling you the prevalent attitude towards the American Army that existed during my service which ended in the late 90's. So things have possibly changed in recent years but with the number of recent 'blue on blue' incidents, involving American Forces killing British Soldiers, I somehow doubt it.
The feeling of the guys at grunt level (not the buddy/buddy HQ officer wallers) was that your kit and 'shiny stuff' is excellent but the quality of training of the guys operating it, left much to be desired and was not a patch on the more disciplined and thorough military training extant in the British Army.
So respectfully suggest that you might be well advised to shovel your officer type drivel elsewhere.
