I'm an Asian-American. I just moved to HK. Not knowing how things work, I was surprised by the hk$200 cover charge I was asked to pay at New Makati. I paid it, thinking that everyone has to pay.
After a while I notice that all the white guys come in for free. I asked the bartender, an old guy, skinny, short guy with glasses (the girls call him apa) why. He said that they are "members." I told him bullshit. He then said:" you can leave if you want to. We charge cover by choice."
I am fucking incensed. I am very sensitive to this crap. He could've explained to me that they charge locals cover. I'm not a fucking local and they made a mistake. But he chose to be rude to me. I have the financial wherewithal to buy the fucking place. He messed with the wrong guy. I happen to know people in Hong Kong and I'm telling everyone right now that the place is getting fucking raided. If not this week, next week.

Welcome to Hong Kong! You could have exercised your right not to pay and moved on to another bar. That's what I have done in the past.
Don't think LE would bother with your "raid". They're too busy pursuing other more important stuff. But even if it could be arranged, I am sure NM will get wind of it way before it happens. There's a look that some of the staff have that tells me that they are far better connected than you are, and I personally would not want to make waves with them. Plus they know what you look like.
Suggest you head to KP or 37D and get a few blowjobs and calm yourself down. RTFF for details.

stay safe![/quote]i have lived in london and travelled the world, but never come across the sort of racism i've encountered in hong kong anywhere else in the world. i'm south asian and it's bad enough that the locals treat you like you're about to rob / mug / [url=http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord123][CodeWord123][/url] them, but what really pisses me off is the sort of profiling that goes on in some of the wanchai clubs. especially when it's some philippino bouncer on the door with darker skin than me!
the police will not bother with this sort of thing, but there has been a major racial-tolerance awareness campaign by the hk govt. in the last year so perhaps things will change. i doubt it, though, because clubs do have the right to exercise discretion about whom they let in and whether or not they charge a cover. there's also some potential moral ambiguity in kicking up a fuss about discrimination at a wanchai establishment where the major driver of business is exploitation.
i can only echo ramn's advice. don't go in if they're trying to cover-charge you. there are plenty of bars and clubs that don't: traffik is one example.

Lots of bullshit in the previous posts from an aggrieved punter who had to pay admission. It goes on all the time in most of the clubs. I don't like the principle of charging coloured people either (I am white by the way), and I have never been subject to a charge, but that's life. Pay up or move on as Ramn says in his post.
As regards any raid, I have been in places visited by LE. The lights go up, the music down and in they come with immigration officials. They are only interested in the girls and will check thier visas. They won't even look at you. The bars are usually tipped off before a raid and, if you are a regular and known in it, they will tell you what is about to happen. As I said, you have nothing to worry about.
