I regularly take a taxi to the BTS, fare is around 42,43 baht. I give 50 and call it even. Last time, I didn't have a 50, so for a 43 baht fare, 3 20's and called it even even as the driver was fishing around in his tray for change. If nothing else Good Karma, and to ask for 13 baht back on New Year's Eve / Day; have a little pity on the taxi drivers. (I'm assuming it was 13 and not something like 130).

Only 1 report from the resurrected Annies on Soi 7/1 but sounds like it might be worth a visit, though I'd like a report on the facilities. Been decades since the LARGE fishbowls, on Petchiburi? For a scrub, Don Quixote isn't bad; I was pleasantly surprised that it included one, though I SHOULD have guessed when I opted for the (bath) tub rather than shower option. Normally, I wouldn't have minded, but my brain was primed from the club. That and the fact that Taxis are consistently upcharging me. Granted, I'm not out in off hours. I jump in, say where I want to go (normally a BTS station), and the meter should start at 35 (that's a day rate). If there's any doubt, I just point to the meter and say "Meter". If there's any problem, I find another (daytime, main road). Now, granted, I don't use a taxi from / to the airport. And, being OLD, I'm not taking taxis late at night. I do know that if an expressway is taken, [B]I[/B] pay the tolls; that's fine (ah, the memories of Don Mueang). My last visit, I did take a taxi cross town, having to visit Thai Airways HQ to pay for a ticket. It was about 300, metered. But, returning, took a taxi to the closest MRT station (Lat Phrao), then MRT back to Asoke. Easy and cheap. What was nice, walking out of the Thai airways office, the doorman asked if I needed a taxi, I said yes, and he had another security guard flag one on the street.

Of course, if you're coming out of a club LATE, on a HOLIDAY, I would think that [I]surcharges[/I] just might apply. And at least once, you should take a motorcycle taxi, E-ticket ride. This trip, I had to once during rush hour, no taxis. Keep the knees tucked in, and pray (even if you're not religious). I don't mind the lane splitting, but when they drive in the opposite traffic lane, using gaps THERE, swerving back into correct lane last minute, for me, PUCKER factor. And try to find out the fare beforehand. I didn't, and the next day, talking to an MP girl, I paid double (the horror, the horror, the fare should have been 25, I paid 50. We both, girl and myself, had a laugh about it). Moral: keep things in perspective, less than 1 USD. I was just happy to have survived, and I didn't even mind being let off 2 blocks early due to my lack of Thai.

I don't contest the white skin versus black skin issue, but Thais tend to be polite and respectful with others, especially with another Thai person.

Plus being a receptionist, she is supposed to be respectful with everybody, and as a receptionist (even with white skin), she doesn't have a higher status than any average person in Pattaya, which makes that comment a bit weird, plus saying "you're a beautiful black woman" in Thai doesn't really sound like something one would naturally say.

It's sad but racism transcends beyond nationality to the color of one's skin. And I agree with you it sounded weird what was said, but it was said. Maybe the receptionist was jealous that this women was making a few days pay for a few hours, who knows but it was strange for sure and given my experiences in other Asian Countries not surprising.

Just curious.[/QUOTE]Yeah, mostly refusing to use the meter. It was only after a few metered rides that I figured I was overpaying. One driver took a longer route. Most of these are from near hotel and maybe it's because it isn't on a main road. None have been that late. The upcharging is not nearly as bad as the pre Uber taxis in my country, but it adds up. I think I would have gotten a pretty decent meal in exchange for the extra I paid. I have never been fond of haggling, and I didn't know how prevalent this practice is, so I had no idea how much time I would have had to spend. I've used grab once so far and it looks like the way I'll be traveling from now onwards.

I am never doing a motorcycle taxi. I've never liked sitting pillion and have done it more than enough already. Actually riding a motorcycle in my country is a lot scarier when you have other motorcycles and approaching in the opposite lane. That's how I got into half of the motorcycle accidents I suffered. I do understand that heart in your mouth feeling though. I once tried to overtake a tractor on a 2 lane road with a bus coming in the other direction. I misjudged the distance and I was certain I'd be meeting my maker in the next couple minutes. Fortunately the bus swerved and the girl who was sitting behind me was none the wiser.
