It has become a talking point for people of a specific political ideology but has routinely caused more harm than good. We have used it on 3 occasions (per family request) in my hospital. No ICU provider would actually clear it but if used under the umbrella of "compassionate care", the palliative medicine team was willing to help manage the case. Basically, at that point, in order to rationalize its use per family request, these patients became designated as "end of life" patients. For all 3 patients, it caused severe cardiac dysrhythmias and one was passed within 12 hrs.

For background reference, ivermectin is an anti-parasitic drug mainly used in livestock. While it may be effective in preventing viral replication and safe in low doses, the much higher dose needed to be effective in humans causes severe side effects, specifically cardiac death.

Of course France has deep catholic roots like a good share of western Europe, it was considered as the eldest daughter of the Church, protestants were segregated or even slaughtered during the Middle Age but now it's a thing of the past.
