Nothing wrong with having a Korean male friend. They are simply not with me when I'm out on the town getting digits. Yea, watched that on a Korean TV show last time I was in Sabang, P.I. Korean TV is a lot better with the English subtitles. It was funny as hell to watch the guy squirm in front of the fiance. The title of the show was "getting even with bad boys" or something like that. The guy in question was super macho when he was out with his friends, but up against his fiance...melted like butter. Kinda unfair to be ambushed like that though. They (the TV people) totally set him up with hidden cameras and all that.

I was in Korea for about a month and at the last week of my trip at KangBook, I got in this nasty bar fight with some Koreans who were staring at us for speaking English.

They assaulted me first by pushing me and fight went on fire between their group and my group.

We all got taken to police station and got interrogated.

All done, no settlement and ETC. Now, I'm back to state.

I got a call from friend in Korea, that one of the Korean man's jaw is shattered and all his jaw ligament has been cut as well as his nose is broken. They are asking for 5k cash to just settle when their hospital fee will be coming out between 20k-30k.

They are threatening us that they will sue us if we don't settle.

I just told my friend to tell those guys that our bill will come out 20-30k easy if we start go to hospital in state.

I have a two concern.

One is that what can happen to my friend living in Korea who has Korean citizenship? He was mainly trying to stop the fight and that is in police report.

Two is what happens if they really sue us?

We had 3 guys and they had 4 guys. But 2 of them ran away when police arrived. Even when we told the police that they had 2 more guys, they would not belive us and not even put that on report. We also have one Korean citizenship girl who is a "victim" of this incident, who got cut by their broken bottle and had 5 stitches on her arm.

If you know any international law or even a law in Korea, help will be greatly appreciated. I might have to talk to them very soon.

Please help.

It very rarely happens that a provider is going to get seriously bent out of shape if you go with someone else, even in the same shop; after all it's just business -- though there are exceptions ime/o they are extremely rare and far between. Of course, even commercially, a (stupid or inexperienced) provider might try to take it out of your wallet later on one way or another. One solution is to do a double w/ her or, at least, come back to her the next time. Stop right there. Who started it, how many of them there were, and whatever else you think justifies why you got in the fight are immaterial and irrelevant.

It comes down to who got injured the worst, making the other party the guilty party. Doesn't matter who started it or why--Korea doesn't have a self-defense law--the "law" is the most injured is the least guilty.

If the other guy is claiming such huge injuries, you are guilty. Period. Your friends' minor injuries mean nothing because you did MORE damage to the other group of guys, and your friends will not be compensated for their minor injuries. You are the guilty party in the eyes of Korean law. As such, if you don't settle up, they WILL sue you and they WILL win.

If you are not in Korea, you're safe. They won't collect from someone internationally, but your friends in Korea will not be so lucky. They will pay either through settlement or through lawsuit. Your name will mostly likely also be in the lawsuit, but they won't be able to collect from you unless you are stupid enough to return to Korea.

A story similar to yours from about 6 years back, 2 Canadians out and about in Shinchon got jumped by three or four Koreans guys, but the Canadians defended themselves well and shattered one guy's jaw. The Canadians were jailed for assault and held until they paid the settlement (ended up being in the realm of $25,000). Once the money was paid, they were immediately deported.
