I checked recently, just out of curiosity, the rates of the (rather modest) pousada where I've stayed six years ago in Camburi (Sao Paulo Litoral Norte) , and found that for 2011/2012 summer season, a room costed 380 BRL / day (and almost double in "peak" NYE or carnaval period). Some 170 €/day. Go figure! A fucking pousada in Litoral Norte is nowadays more expensive than the Four Seasons Bali or the Shangri La Bangkok!

I can't afford the £500 flights to the far east or South America, so I've got not option but to stick with Europe (East or West). Lots to do in BKK other than Soi Cowboy. Temples, ruins, street markets, floating market, etc.

If you go to SIN you can easily do a side trip on discount regional airline to BKK, Kuala Lumpur, Pemang, Siem Reap, HCMC, Hanoi, Bali.

Tiger Air or Air Asia are good cheap airlines. Use ZUJI dot com or the Amex travel site for good but cheap local hotels. Hotels in SIN will be relatively pricey unless you go way downmarket. Think of hotel or AMEX MR points if you have them.
