There is bugger all for locals in D1. D1 is for tourists and those who are entertaining guests.
So that would rule that out.

I mean...I too always found some forums in ISG very (unreasonably?) cryptic.
HMCH one seems to be one of them when it comes to addresses or areas.
HCMC has already its own unlogic District numbering, if we add cryptic abbreviations there is poor information given out.
Dont need a picture of the house, but if i look at BT on the given site (thanks for it!) I will find at least 3 options under BT....
I am firm believer of RTFF but if I need to search for every location abbreviation, honestly, I give up.
I go to HCMC once a year for a couple of days: time is tight already (my problem), oppurtunities even tighter ( my problem too), but if I need to spend long time to find or understand what a location is (I am ok to spend time to RTFF!), then I give up! (my problem too, lol)

I never knew what street name, just what landmarks to turn at and approx how far via my bikes odometer I had to go down.

Then I found ISG. I too was stumped with the abbreviations.
I ended up writting these down on a piece of paper and looking the streets up.
Soon you will see the commonly mentioned ones and then you will be familiar with them.

I agree with you Mik. When I first got here I had no idea about ISG. Of course I did waste a lot of time and money in places like HBT bars, courtesy of taxi drivers, but I eventually started wondering around on my own on the motorbike. I started going into places and checking it out for myself. After 6-months to a year of being in VN did I find ISG.

I still go out and adventure on my own, trying places that have never been mentioned on this forum. Its hard to believe that the only good spots in HCM, or VN for that matter, are spoken about here. Try it for yourself. You'll find some deadends, or something that you dont want, but when you find a diamond in the ruff, the feeling is great!

For anyone wasting time looking for Benny's, please let me be ever so explicit.

Dien Bien Phu (DBP) is a very long street, running through more than one district. So, for instance, I gave the moto driver the address of 110 Dien Bien Phu. His reply: "in which district, 1 or 3? " Well, the info from the post I read had not stated a district, so he took me to district 1. It's there that I found a restaurant, not a hot toc.

I came home and searched further and did find another post that did state it was in Binh Thanh (BT) district. So, I get on a moto again and sure enough, a mere half mile from my 110 DBP in district 1, I found 110 DBP in Binh Thanh district. And, voila, there's Benny's.

I have now figured out (correct me if I am wrong, you old timers) that Q is synonymous with district. I suspect it may be an abbreviation for "quartier", the French word for district.

And, finally, I personally have mixed feelings for Benny's. Is it worth 200,000? Yes, probably. Is it warm, friendly, inviting? Well, in my experience, no.

I went in, was escorted to a nice room by a quite beautiful 20 something Viet girl who instructed me to lay down in the reclining, dentist-like chair and motioned me to drop my trousers. Ho Chi Minh City's central area is divided into Districts, some with numbers and others with names. The numbered districts are NOT next to one another in numerical order. The central city has Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 by number and Binh Thanh, Tan Binh, Phu Nhuan, Go Vap, Tan Phu and Thu Duc by name. The Vietnamese word for District is Quan which is abbreviated Q. So Q BT would be Binh Thanh District. Most streets are short and located in only one district. But some streets are quite long and may be found over two or even three districts. You can pick up a city map at FAHASA bookshops on Le Loi St in Q1 or on Nguyen Hue St also in D1. These shops are right in the central tourist area of D1 near the big hotels.

Districts are divided in Wards, called Phuong in Vietnamese and often abbreviated by letter F. Most wards are numbered but some are named. For example, most people's favorite Blow and Gos are in District 1, Dakao Ward. District 1 is shaped kind of like an L turned on its side, so Dakao sort of sticks out into an area surrounded by D3, Phu Nhuan and Binh Thanh.
