Trip report: The Preparation
Just getting back from Sosua and I had a blast like before. Knowledge is power and so I highly recommend anybody that wants to come to Sosua to do your research on the board. Sosua is a hustler's town and if you don't have the knowledge or you don't have common sense you will get hustled quick. In Sosua it's either you hustle or get hustled!
Below are things I did to prepare myself before I left the states as well as my housing and transportation. Please note some of the things that I speak of below have already been posted through out the years on board.
Preparation
Before you leave make a color photo copy of your passport and your drivers
License. When you get to your spot lock your passport and drivers license away with your valuables. For now on every time you step out you only carry your copies. Please note that your copies are fine when changing money at the bank
A couple days before you leave call up your bank and let them know that you're going out of the country. Let them know the days and how long you're going to be in DR. The day of your flight I would call them again to make sure it's noted and to have a number to call them once you're in DR just in case you use your debit/credit card and they freeze your account. Speaking of credit cards it's highly recommended that you don't USE It! I told my friends that came down with me to only use your debit card to take out money at the bank and that's it.
No need to transfer money at the airport cus they will get you. I transfer my money on the streets(1usd =36peso) and at Scotia Bank where I got a better deal at 1usd = 36.20 peso. Also as a general rule with counting money I took the notion that every 100 peso = 3usd (technically it's 2. 74usd)
Speaking Spanish is KEY in DR. Get Rosetta Stone. Get a book. A translator. Do whatever you need to do to learn the language. One of the forefathers recommended an app on your iPhone called SpainishDict! It's free and the best part is that you don't have to be online for this app to work
Accommodations
Once again I stayed at Casa Linda. Had no problems bringing as many girls as I liked. As long as they have an ID and their of age then all is good. I stayed in a 3bedroom villa with a pool and BBQ for 190usd a nite for 7 days. Total damage including 16% tax was 1543usd. Divide that by 3 amigos and that's 514 USD per person which isn't bad at all. Please note that when reserving the villa you have to put down a 10% deposit and when you arrive you'll have to put down another 100 USD room deposit that you'll get back once you leave the villa. The only negative is that most likely your going to need your own car or at the very least get to know a taxi person that will come and pick you up. Other then that I highly recommend Casa Linda.
Food/Liquor
Anything that's imported in DR gets heavily tax and last time I went down their I spent more money on food and drinks then on woman. So to try and combat that me and the fellas bought a whole bunch of liquor with us. We would've brought food as well but didn't have time to properly pack the food. Now surprisingly customs didn't check my bag or my friends but if they did I would've said it's for my girlfriends familia. At any rate I had no problems at all
My Guide
Since this been only my 2nd time down in Sosua I'm still relatively a newbie to the game and since my Spanish isn't up to par yet to monger truly free I had a guide with me and my friends damn near every step of the way.
When I was down in Sosua previously I came across a haitian cat name Junior. He spoke good English and showed me areas outside of Sosua and more importantly he wasn't a begger. He'll take care of you first and foremost before he received anything in return. Junior speaks English, Spanish, German, and Creole. We became good friends and kept in touch so when it was time to come back down all it took was one phone call and he was their picking me up from the airport.
Having a guide is not crucial but to me until my Spanish is up to par I would highly give having a guide chill with you some serious thought. If anybody is serious about wanting a guide pm me and I will give you his info
Driving in DR
You have to be fucking nuts to drive in DR. I'm serious it ain't no joke. To those who drive down their you get my up most respect. I had my guide drive the majority of the time cus I for damn sure wasn't getting behind the wheel
Now speaking of driving I didn't rent a car from budget and/or other businesses. I rented a montero sport 4 door truck from Juniors friend Cesa. Now before I rented the truck I spoke to cesa directly and let him know that since I won't be driving if anything happens the liabilities is on my guide He agreed and me and my amigos paid him 300usd for a week. Now I would not recommend doing this cus if we did happen to get into an accident Cesa most likely would've put the blame on me. But like anything in life nothing venture, nothing gain.
