I have a large, statistically significant sample size and I would have to report nearly opposite results. Perhaps there are other reasons for this discrepancy but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

I decided to check out Plaza Minorista around lunch time. Followed Avenida de Greiff. Starting from Plazuela Franciso Antonio Zea the area gets rough, full of trash, and lots of homeless people, some even camping in tents, all like that right up until the roundabout next to Plaza Minorista.

I didn't want to walk back the same way so went looking for a safer route. I knew the general direction towards which I should be going and just followed the crowd from Plaza Minorista, bunch of home supplies shops around, tiles, chairs etc. Relatively clean and no homeless. About two blocks from Plaza Botero a guy started walking next to me and struck up a conversation. Where am I from etc. He started in Spanish then switched to botched English. We exchanged couple friendly words, names, handshake, he said "Welcome to Colombia" and split to the right. I continue walking.

There was a short and empty street. I noticed the guy is back walking alongside me, he waved and came close. He put his arm around my neck to give me friendly 'hug', more like a strong squeeze. I jiggled out of it and continued walking. He asked for money with no so friendly look now. OK so it's like that then, I better get the fuck out of this situation ASAP. I stalled to buy some time and eventually gave him some 2's I keep loose in my pocket and picked up my pace, hoping he'll piss off. He wasn't satisfied. He started pointing to a wallet in my pocket. I decidedly said no. He tried to take off my backpack, but I didn't allow him, pushing his hands back on couple attempts. Some random guy carrying big black trash bag walked nearby curiously observing the scene, he didn't look homeless just like a local (the would be robber too BTW, he wasn't wearing rugs just normal clothes and a cap).

We are out the quiet street now. I stopped in front of one of the hardware shops with the shopkeeper moving his stuff around. We were standing there three of us, the robber then wanted to use my phone 'for a minute'. I repeatedly said 'no' with 'no fucking way, period' attitude and we were just staring at each other. He tied to pull it out form my pocket. Again, I pushed off his attempts.

After a while he went couple meters forward and waited with the guy which was carrying a trash bag. Then they disappeared somewhere but I knew they are waiting. The shopkeeper shrugged his shoulders and went back to doing his stuff. I noticed another shop in the opposite direction and darted that way. Surely, the guy was soon next to me. I stopped next to the shopkeeper and a customer, again said 'no' to the guy and waved for him to go the fuck away. He walked away and I lost sight of him.

I was getting closer to the crowds, halfway between Carrera 53 and 52 on Avenida de Greiff I noticed him again on the other side of the street, walking parallel and looking at me. He then started his attempt to cross the street to cut me off and I decide to cross as well to avoid that and join the crowds on the other side. We meet on a little concrete patch in the middle of the Avenida de Greiff and he attempts again to pull out my phone and I push him back. I run across the street just before the traffic starts to move, so he's cut off now.

Finally he catches up with me on the crosswalk between the corner of Carrera 52 and Plaza Botero but gives up another attempt. We exchange not so friendly looks as he walks north on Carrera 52 and blends with the crowd. Taxi driver standing next to his car points at him and asks me what's going on. Not sure how to explain it, I just say 'Celural. Puta. ', seemed he understood. I'm in no mood for play so move thought the crowds to Parque Berrio station and catch a metro back home.

Fuck. If he had a knife or decide to hit me in the face I'd be probably done for, since he was stronger than me. Clearly he wasn't prepared or too sure of himself but saw an opportunity. I don't dress fancy; sneakers, blue jeans, simple t-shirt and no jewellery nor a watch, but there is no mistaking me for a local either.

And a lot of the Colombians / Venezuelans, both men and women in Centro carry knives to protect themselves.

Or they are just completely leaving the country and making more money than they would ever get in Colombia regardless of the city. I know this area you are talking about between like Prado and Minorista. Lots of homeless people and drug addicts and like zero police presence. There's a place where homeless people can go to shower its called servicios basicos DIA #2 or some shit like that. Lots of drugs and drug addicts in this area they smoke a drug called bazuko which is similar to crack. I've been thru there once but I had a vennie with me. Although I never had anyone try to mess with me like what you're describing, I did feel alot of bad vibes there.

I would not recommend walking through there alone. Probably not even with locals, there's nothing over there anyways unless if you wanted to buy drugs which I wouldn't recommend either.
