Medellin Reports

In a nutshell the complaint against we Americans is we don't show the proper respect when in a foreign culture. So for us on this forum, the idea would be to show that respect and avoid being the ugly American. Re dressing, I think about this alot, and haven't really come up with a solution. For normal walking around and informal drinking, say at La Strada during daytime, there's really nothing wrong with jeans and a t-shirt. At Oviedo Mall, though, or somewhere nice at night, a nice shirt and slacks would be nice. The single article of clothing that should probably be changed out are shoes. I believe I will leave my Wal-Mart velcro tennis shoes at home this time, and wear some decent loafers. Although if you are staying on La Loma de Alejandria, you will be walking up and downhill a lot, so you may want to bear that in mind and make sure you have some comfortable walking shoes.

Most apartments you rent or especially hotel or hostel will have Wifi, Most of the cafes in the south now have free wifi as well as the malls (I'm not quite sure which ones though). Do NOT make it a habit of carrying around and displaying your laptop, iphone, blackberry or tablet in the public You become an easy target for thugs on motos who won't think twice about capping somebody for an IPAD. Do your surfing in the safe com finds behind closed doors. Not sure if they have 3G yet in Colombia because I don't bring anything of value out of the apartment so hence no need for 3G.

"Hi, I live in Colombia and I use my iPad with a 3G data plan a lot.
Here we have cellular companies 3 options. Comcel, Movistar and Tigo. All of three have a prepaid data plans. The only issue is that they don't have microsim, I had to cut the Sim card and it works very well on my iPad.

You can check COMCEL, MOVISTAR and TIGO web sites (don't forget to put ".co" at the end) for reviewing all prepaid data plan that they have. You can choose a day, a week and a month data plan unlimited without contract. All of them are 3G.

They were drinking rum and being very loud, while all the other people on the bus were quiet or talking in low tones. I don't know if the locals can distinguish Brits from Americans; but since they were speaking English, my thoughts were that most people on the bus would label them as "Ugly Americans". I guess that is a burden we have to bear. Most English speakers being seen as Americans.

One does not have to dress to the nines, but basic respect to local costoms. Now some will say that they see Colombian men wearing shorts, but those are usually young bucks, not 30 plus year old men, middle class or higher. I can't tell you how many times I have overheard the chicas talking shit about the way some foolish gringo dresses- it just can't be good for the overall quality of sessions. Of course, some take the "I can do what I want and fuck everyone else approach" tha some take her, but that, in the long term, leads to ill feelings on the part of those wherever we travel. IMHO.

Speaking only for myself. I honestly would not be caught dead in shorts anywhere except my home, the gym, and sometimes at the beach. Those are all places where most everybody else also wears shorts. The thought of walking down the high street in a small town or through a shopping center or in Times Square, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street, the Champs-Elysee, or the Bund. WHATEVER THE WEATHER. Just seems odd.

Valid point Psychman about the respect and I must agree that it is relative to the quality of the interaction/session with the chica.

Even in TJ where I been frequenting for many years, at times, even when I don't want to dress up (shorts are main stay in SoCal), the reaction/attention that I have received from the chicas is astounding. They may be *****s but they really appreciate a man who is clean and well dressed.

They WANT to spend time with you as you are presenting yourself with confidence and by your manner of dress, respect. And they gladly give it!

The saying is so true to "Treat a ***** like a lady and a lady like a *****". This "Treatment" includes the respect shown to a working lady by being clean and dressed nicely.

Many times, when I put on a nice pair of slacks and a long sleeve button down shirt they will always comment how nice I look. This usually leads to a great time/session with the gal.

I think I will be packing some of my Nordstroms finest along with my leather shoes made in Spain for my Medellin trip - two weeks away.
