I think hes got it now
In football we used to call that pile-ing on...
SavePros,
No offense but packing anything in your checked bag is a MAJOR rookie mistake. Never, ever put anything in your checked bag that is worth stealing(to a broke ass Dominican).
When I go to Manizales,Colombia I always pack a bottle of hot sauce for my novia's mother. I have had it stolen twice so what chance would a camera have?
OK, sem cachaça
Ypioca is $30 US a liter in Montgomery County, MD (my home). Ronrico is $14 for a 1.75-liter bottle. Guess which I drink at home?
The original daiquiri was made as is a caipirinha, but with rum instead of that famous "Brazilian cane jet fuel." I bet Brugal is fantastic, served that way.

8th Wonder!
My girl came back from the market and fixed us all breakfast. Damn this woman is amazing. After we ate I told my girl that I would call her later about tonight. She's says ok and left. Human nature kicked in and I wanted to try something new. Open the portable menu (cell phone) to see what's available. Hmmm let's call Ms Melons from Crystals. Called her up and sure nuff in 45mins lunch was served. Damn those tigo bitties were HUGE and for good reason. Found out that she was pregnant. As long as it wasn't mines I didn't give a damn. Fooled around with Ms Melons for a couple of hours. Had to put my signature (cum) on those melons. "Truly yours, Coolie High"! Gave her 1800peso and off she went. Now that's room service with a smile.
I believe we have discovered the 8th wonder of the world -- Ms. Melons. Those babies are perfectly formed, natural, young and succulent. The biggest, ripest fruit I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot!) Someone should make a plaster cast of them for future generations to admire. Next time I'm at Cristal's I'm going to see if she'll do it. Better yet, send me a PM with her number -- Please, please, please.
I'll need some help explaining to my Dominican wife though. Yes, honey, I'm buying 50 gallons of plaster of Paris for a little project to do with work . . .

One Monger's Opinion
I need to pick your brain if you don't mind sir.).was going to pm you for info but figured maybe it's good intel for the board. I often contemplate moving to the Dr in the future and would like to know your views. You live there hopefully you will oblige..).
Sorry about the slow response time. This forum moves fast! Of course, I love to give my opinion, whether wrong or right! And I'm always right because if I ever catch myself being wrong, I change my opinion.
I've heard from gringos living there that you are constantly reminded that you arent Dominican? I don't want to be dominican just respected as an individual.
Is everything based on your generosity(money)?
How do you deal with no good people you come across?
You'll be more respected if you learn what the local prices are for everything and don't throw money around. The average Dominican thinks the average gringo is rich and stupid -- and they are right! You are rich because you probably make 10x what most people here do, and you are stupid because you don't know it! Therefore: you are like a Do-do bird ready to be plucked.
The Dominican way: that slow never rush, do as little as possible attitude drives me crazy.
I'm in the bank, 20 people in line and this Dominican dude is romancing the teller and she is loving it while everyone has to wait.
I'm at a restaurant and the Dominican waiter is questioning my girl like she is his(damn dude).
Is it me or do most Dominican dudes feel every girl is for them?? .
That attitude drives me crazy too, also that fact that many would be considered very impolite in our culture. You gotta realize, many, many people here have not been taught basic politeness at home and many have not finished high school or know how to read and write in their own language.
That includes behavior like eating greasy food with fingers and wiping them on the pants, hacking up a loogy at dinner and spitting, cutting in front of another person in line, stopping your car in the middle of the street/in front of a driveway, . . . and the above is not limited to young guys, either. Good looking chicas partipate as well.
How you react depends on your personality. Do you normally suffer through and let bygones be bygones, or do you say something that might [CodeWord140] someone off and cause a scene? I tend more towards the latter. If you can make a joke out of it, however, that's usually better. Of course you need to speak Spanish. At the bank: Hey, am I going to be able to make my transaction? When does the novella end? At the restaurant: Hey, maybe you didn't notice it, but you are the waiter, I'm your customer, and this is my girlfriend. Are you doing to take my order now or do you want to change places?
One time when I was waiting in the Claro main office (the battlestar of the evil empire), I said out loud in Spanish so everyone could hear, "Why does this company make all it's customers suffer waiting an hour just to place an order?" There was a lot of agreement in that room!
By the way, that "do as little as possible" attitude changes dramatically if you pay by the job instead of by the hour.
I call attention to the impoliteness. If someone cuts in front of me in line at the propane station, it's, "You didn't just cut in front of me did you? Why did you do that? Mr. station attendant: You're not going to serve him first are you? Mr. Supervisor, Is that how this station operates?"
What kind of security measures do you need as a gringo living there? Gated community, guns, dogs, etc???
If you have stuff people want to steal, I would advise all of the above.
If, like me, you can't afford the gated community (overrated anyway) and the gun (most Dominicans just show them off while playing Dominos and don't have a clue about how to shoot them or handle them safely) dogs are especially useful, and cheap too. Dominican dogs will just show up at your house volunteering to be your dog, and they will eat just about anything and be glad to get it - including rice, chicken bones, etc. They get to know who should and should not be there, and bark like banshees when a stranger comes by!
Also, get to know your neighbors. I live in a Dominican neighborhood. It's not your neighbors you are worrying about, it's the homeless or very poor people coming from other neighborhoods. We had a guy try to steal my neighbor's radio from his car. It was about 3 am. The dogs woke everyone up. The neighbors got together and caught the guy -- they called the police too -- but not before they roughed him up. No broken bones, but I don't think he'll be coming back here soon.
There are also some questionable characters, like the "luz fixer" who will illegally connect your house to the electricity for a small fee. Just say no. Electricity only costs about $30 to $50 a month without air. You don't want a relationship with the guy -- having him constantly borrow money for gas or bum cigarettes. Meanwhile, wondering when he's going to pay a late night visit to "borrow" your laptop.
I know some cool Dominicans but I always feel I'm on the outside looking in. Thats whats stopping me from moving there. The exception is I know some Dominican chics who respect me for me(and my pesos).
You'll always be a gringo, but you can be a respected gringo and have plenty of Dominican friends and acquaintances if you treat people with equal respect, but don't let people take advantage of you.
I hope you decide to take the plunge and move here. It's a fantastic place. All the girls you can possibly bang, and at reasonable rates. What's not to like?

living in the DR
I agree with every word Thedrman has written.
Love the description of the Claro office as the Battlestar (or should it be Death Star? - I'm not a fan of that stuff). Even in this disfunctional shithole of an island they take the prize for total incompetence and rudeness. Claro/Codetel is owned by the richest man in the world, Carlos Slim. Being rude and incompetent has never done much for my bank balance, though I keep trying.
I haven't been here long and my Spanish is very rudimentary so I am not able to complain and "fight back" verbally the way the Thedrman is recommending. I look forward to being able to do so before too long!
[i]
The guy who sells the paintings is the opposite. He will continue to hassle you until you just end up buying a painting. Think that buying one painting will do the trick of getting him to leave you alone? Think again! I now have two of his damn paintings sitting in my closet still with the rubber band on them. ...
BAG GUYS AT THE AIRPORT
Those sons of bitches are greedy. I was already prepared to give the guy 50 pesos once I arrived at the curbside of POP airport to go home. He took my bags, asked what airline, and put them on the scanner. I handed him the 50 pesos and he smiles, looks off elsewhere and mutters “100 pesos” more. We both laughed. We start to walk over to the counter and he mutters “100 pesos more”. We both laugh again. Finally I tell him that’s all I have and told him to “take care.” I left DR with not even 1 peso in my pocket.
But I shall return :)
I have been to Sosua maybe 40 times and I have never bought a painting or given any money to the bag guys at the airport. I usually leave with some DR currency which comes in useful next time.
You need to look up the Spanish word for "no".

Just a little respect
I don't know if any members of the board were at Sosua beach yesterday, but there was a group of "Americans" (and that is as far as I'll go with that) sitting in a large group towards the Charamicos end of the beach. I was leaving with my chica (I've explained to her that she is not the only one but that she is number one, and she is ok with that) and a Dominican friend of mine (I happen to look Dominican, although I'm not). Several of the guys was checking her out as we passed by. I understand, as she is very pretty and has the kind of fat ass I like. Of course, as their is always an idiot in every group, one guy started to whistle at her and then made some comments as we walked by ( don't forget, he was in a large group). I looked at him for a moment and asked him "Are you whistling at her or him. She's with me, but he might be available", (referring to my Dominican buddy, although he's not gay). The idiots friends laughed.
I got the impression that if this idiot were alone he may have looked, as we all do, but he may not have acted the ass that he did simply because he was with his "crew". Apparently he thought we were all Dominican and it was OK to be disrespectful. Some mongers need to know that not every Dominican woman you see is a puta, and not all of them will be interested in YOU.
-
Sorry to hear that happened to you. I walked down el conde (sdq) with a chica with a big booty in a mini skirt, the Dominican guys checked her out and didn't say a word or whistle.
Some foreign mongers should understand that some Dominican dudes are packing guns. I wouldn't want to a get a drunk Dominican guy pissed off, who is carrying a pistol, additionally the Dominican guy can call his crew who will all show up packing guns.
Too much alcohol sometimes brings out the idiot in all of us.

I bitched about buying the paintings but I promise you I would have never entertained the gentleman if I wasn't genuinly interested in the paintings. For what it's worth they are actually pretty good. I don know if he paints them himself, but they are not all that bad. I see this guy all the time and in March (my last day there) I told him I would buy one when I returned.
As far as the bag guys at the airport, they always run my bags through the scanner on the curb without me having to wait. I always see all the "real tourist" have someone go through their bags after it is run through the scanner (probably because they never tip the bag men). I have never had a problem yet. They run my bags through the scanner and walk me over to the AA counter past everyone else. The most I have ever given them is 50 pesos. He probably kept asking me for "100 pesos more" thinking it was my first time there. That's is why I just laughed along with his ass...

I agree with everything you have said. To me it doesn't matter if you are with a working girl or not. Guys will be quick to point out that this is all just a "fantasy", but that is still no excuse to be disrespectful to others while they are playing out their fantasy.

So let me get thus straight;
You want respect for a Chica that in all probabilities could have sucked off one or more of the group during a trip while you were out of the country.
LMAO!

True, but what I've tended to notice is that there is usually the likelihood of them being disrespectful when they're in large groups, as opposed to being alone or with just another monger. I have a hell of alot more respect for the guy who is solo and will run his mouth to a group rather than the idiot who is in a group and has you outnumbered 10-1 and his mouth then becomes bigger than his balls.

Once the "Captain Save'a Hoe" accusations begin to fly then it will be time to move on to another topic because it's probably just going to get worse before it gets better...
