I just want to pipe in on a lot of posters here saying that all Koreans over tip the women here kind of talk and that their ruining it here and stuff. I've talked to women working in AC and Cebu in regards to this and I heard the same thing. Koreans are known to be big tippers at time and also are known to not tip at all to almost nothing. The women in Cebu were even saying they wanted to make sure beforehand with the Koreans if there was going to be anything in it for them because of their tendency to not give them anything except the barfine and apparently then it wasn't worth it for them to go.

In actuality, two waitresses who I was talking to about this the other night said Americans are on average the best tippers. So this is based on what the women are telling me. I wanted to bring this up because I think the Koreans are getting bashed for something that may actually not be true but is spread around here like it is. I'm curious if other people on this board here actually hear that Koreans are really big tippers on average as is being said by what the women working the bars are saying. One of the women recently I talked to has been working here for 3 years and the other about 8 months. One of the Cebu women worked for over 3 years also in a very popular bar there.

I'm from Aus and I noticed that the girls don't expect a tip either. Was there for 4 days last week (barfined 3 girls) and none asked or even hinted for one. I always put 1500 peso into their jeans pocket or purse as a kind gesture. These girls truly deserve it and its just loose change for us in the west.

Bar review:

Love and Music. Really enjoyed this bar. There are some stunners here to rival the cebu/makati big bars. Enjoyed the fact that the girls were in dresses, they look so much more elegant. Nice boudoir type setting/seats. Bought a couple of ladydrinks but didn't establish enough of a rapport with any girl to bf from here. Definitely on my hit list next time though.

Crystal Palace. My old favourite. Around 3 or 4 girls that I found attractive enough to bf. Took out a spotlight girl who was good value. Seemed a bit high maintenence though, but all in all good conversations and a smoking hot body/face.

Dirty Duck. Some of you may remember this bar as a dump (under the previous management) but it is one of the best there is now. Around 2.3 girls that I would have bf. Ended up taking out a 19 y/o waitress with a very cute face/personality (body a bit skinny but still acceptable enough). Thoroughly enjoyed my time with her. This bar is where the party was at, shame I didn't have time to go back a second time. Has a reputation for guys getting blowjobs next to the stage. Saw a girl pull out one guys cock so I can believe it happens. Also saw a couple of girls go topless.

Eruptions. Worth a visit. Tonnes of girls but only perhaps 1 or 2 I would bf. Some good looking waitresses who spoke very good english that I made friends with and wanted to take me to Mansion disco in Friendship area, but I didn't have time. All in all, worth spending time here.

Skytrax. If you can dance, man you don't need to barfine. Plenty of talent here, I'm sure freebies abound, well worth a visit. In fact next trip I might barfine less and concentrate on picking up here, it was that good.

Dissapointments. Forbidden city, shooterz, neros, blue nile and generally most other bars on fields. Generally speaking I don't find 98% of the girls attractive enough to bf, but despite that, most have a pleasing personality that goes some way towards having a good time in a bar. I had a policy of buying a LD for any girl I saw that was attractive, regardless of whether I had a girl already sitting with me with a drink. Often had 2 or 3 of the hottest girls drinking with me at some bars such as crystal palace. This policy worked as I 'left no stone unturned' in the search for the perfect barfine. It did get a bit pricey though. Not an approach for the cheap charlies.

I've talked to the girls also and most of them said that koreans are horrible tippers. And yes Americans are the best. This applies to PI only.

From my conversations for THAI girls, however, Japanese overpay by far and are the easiest customers. 3-3-3 is not a myth. This is straight from the girls mouths' not mine.

Well, if you were handing out the LD to all and sundry, they didn't have to hint now did they? They knew you were going to tip. These ladies are pretty smart and know who and how to target. I bet they had the tip figured out before they went out the door of the bar.

Good for them, and if it served a need for you, good for you.

On the other hand, other Aussies there will have to take note and tip less - just to balance it up. And we will.

As an aside, I think that one of the reasons that Japanese tip so much is that in their own society, they start off at work at a low level, and have to work their way up the heirarchy over time. Of course that means that in the early twenties, single men only get a nod of a head from the women in the office, and it is only when they are in their fifties do they get a proper bow from the office women. Thus when these single Japanese blokes get to AC or THL in their twenties, they are starved of respect from the women round them. So for them, the tipping gets them the attention they are starved of all year. For them, a few days of expensive tips more than compensates for the fact that they get attention they would never dream about getting at home.

I suspect that for single young Japanese guys, tipping is more about their one chance in the year to be a 'big guy'...all too soon they have to go back home to being Mr Nobody. The opportunity once a year to throw some notes on the bar and have lots of ladies squealing over them is just too great for the ego to resist.

I would probably do the same if I were in their place and treated like a nobody because I was young and single, so I don't mean to criticise, rather, explain why they tip like they do.

On base salaries alone, waitresses get less than dancers. You can see Help Wanted signs everywhere yourself. It usually says something like:

Dancers P170/day
Waitresses P120/day

But clearly, waitresses have ability to make much more with being bought drinks or being barfined. How many customers, when paying a P85 bill, would give a P100 bill and say "keep the change"? Tons. And it adds up. Lots of us blokes aren't gonna want the P15 anyways. Takes up space in our wallets.

You don't think single young American guys also wanna be the "big guy" in Angeles? If anything, your typical American is bigger nobody in America. At least in Japan, there's decent and legal mongering there. The skin trade in Japan is big business and openly accepted.

I hate to say this, but your explanations on why Japanese mongers are generous tippers hasn't been particularly well argued.

I have a better explaination. Remember that Korean and Japanese tourists don't have to fly very far to go to Philippines. Cheapo CebuPacific flies direct from Osaka and Seoul. Airfare for them is a fraction of what you'd pay if flying in from North America or Australia. Simply put, without needing to spend much on airfare, they have more money to throw around.

Thats interesting especialy comming from an Ausie about how the girls did not get the memo on how the Ausies don't tip I would love to hear the take from a real Japanese guy on this subject as well. The asian culture seems to be a somewhat closed society as far as sharring this type of information. Maybe a Westernized Japanese young man can give us an update? Any takers?

That's an interesting point they made to you. That if there was no tip, its not worth going with the Korean. At Vikings and the Mango bars, the barfine is p1700. The girl gets 1000, and they have never asked me for a tip. Where the heck did that come from, that p1000 is not worth it for her. In AC, the girls evenly split the barfine of (approx) p1400, to get 700 for a LT. I've only had two AC gals ask for tip (and it was recently, in the same week, which makes it a bit depressing). Filipinas in AC are happy with p700 for a LT; cebuanas think they are so special that they must have a tip to make the trip out of the bar worthwhile? Almost all of us are offering taxi money anyway. Its an interesting attitude on the girl's part.

Good point. Also I spend a lot more per a day if it is a short trip. But I have to be thrifty if I plan on staying 2 plus weeks.

Think of a weekend in Vegas, compared to how much you would spend if you were in Vegas for close to a month.

True but asians are big showoffs. Almost infantile to my western eyes.

Plus these Japanese guys get only a brief stint of leisure time each year whilst killing themselves for the company the rest of the time.

Whatever the reason, I've never had a problem with it. If I go to bars I often find the girl that picks me is the best partner. Cold bloodedly choosing one 'meat market' style is often a recipe for disaster, YMMV.

We pay our staff a decent salary in the first place!

We do recognise superior or exceptional service & will tip for that when appropriate.

We find being expected to tip routinely tedious & insulting to both parties.

The P4P'ers in places like Burgos (Manila) expect big tips because they've been spoiled by newby blowin's & local playboys.

One needs to keep perspective. Whilst the temptation is there to rationalise big tips like p1500 by converting it to your local currency the truth is P4P are already earning a half month of non P4P salary in one session alone. Girls in AC rarely ask me & I only give for exceptional service.

Of course not, plenty of people are in that boat. However, that supports my argument in a way since the US is a tipping culture. Tips enable people to play the 'big man'. I did not particularly feel I needed to describe every tipping culture to make a point though. :)

The point I was making was that in Japan, quite often there is a universal correspondence between increasing age and 'respect' at work. If you are good looking enough in Australia and the US, you will, I suggest get a bit more respect than in a more rigid hierarchical society. I was not trying to suggest that there was no correspondence at all in other societies, just that in Japan, it is more so. Not mutually exclusive.

Sydney to Manila PAL leave 1150 arrive 1630 same day, $670 USD.
Tokyo to Manila PAL leave 0930 arrive 1310 same day, $280 USD .

Not really anything in it to support a 'better explanation'. I don't think most of us would care about the price difference as explained by the proposition by one poster that since the Japanese came for shorter times ;) they might spend more on a weekend jaunt than those of us who have a couple of weeks or more at a time. $280USD over two or three days is more per day than $670 over fourteen days.

Still, it is all conjecture really.

Four weeks to 'wheels up' then off to Pattaya....will have to leave these pages for a while, eh?
