Scouting report for Rio. From my visit in August
I have enclosed my scouting report for Rio. Some may find it helpful. I originally posted this in another mongers forum. It is certainly not comprehensive but everything reported here is first hand.
I was at the tail end of a whirl wind tour through Latin America. I had little time for the hobby and my two attempts were unsuccessful. Finally I find myself in Rio and my appointments for the afternoon have been cancelled. I call an agency and the person working the phone says 'No way. In Brasil the definition of motel is different than the North American definition of motel. The term motel seems to mean adult hotel and I was told that children are not even allowed in a motel.
So I decide that Wednesday night is going to be a scouting night. Against popular advice, I hoped in a cab and I asked the cabbie to take me to the Gentleman's club. He takes me first to Centaurus which is a 'Termas' or Brasilian brothel. I go inside to find out what the rules are. The lady at the door says that there is a 450R$ up front fee. Of that fee. 120$R is the entrance fee and 330$R is for the 'first relax. ' A 'relax' with a girl is a maximum of 40 minutes with 1 SOG if I understood her correctly. Each additional 'relax' is 330 R$. The exchange rate for the USD in Brasil is 1USD equals anywhere from 1. 62-1. 8 Real (R$). Centaurus was offering 1. 7R$ per 1 USD$ for cash. Also, if you wanted to pay with a credit card the up front fee for Centaurus is 470R$ (20 additional R$) Also drinks are extra and a beer was 5R$ each. Next, the cabbie took me to Barbarellas. If you strike a deal with one of them you can take them out of the bar by paying their bar fine of 60R$. I walked around inside the club and I observed a few interesting girls but I decided to leave to visit the next site. Outside there are hookers on the street leaning against cars. Across the street is a swingers club. We go down the street to another club. I walk in and I am the only one in there. Next we drive down the Copacabana Beach on the Ave. Atlantica. All along the avenue there are cars parked with girls leaning against or sitting on the hood. I spot a real hottie and I ask the cabbie to stop. I get out and approach the hottie in question and determine that she is not really a girl. She looks damn good anyway and her starting price was 150R$. I get back in and we drive to the Balconi Bar. I get out and again there are 20+ working girls and I am approached by a few of them. I have two separate conversations with two pretty light black girls and they both tell me 300R$. Also there is no enterance fee or bar fine. I get the feeling that you can probably can talk them down a bit.
I decide to terminate my scouting trip and I decide that I will go to Centaurus the next night because they have the reputation of having the best girls and I do not have to pay the extra expense of a motel room which adds 39R$-180R$/hour and an extra level of complexity. I paid the cabbie 55R$ for an hour scouting trip and decided to call it a night.

The girls were trying to talk me into a party with all the 4-colors of Brazilian women. I just want a beer and a chance to get acclimated. At my suggestion they start to kiss each other. Rio de Janeiro costs with strong Real vs USD
I used to travel to Brazil often around 2003 when $1USD=R3. 6. Then things were very cheap. 9's in Help asked 200R, I rent a decent apt on Ave Nossa Sra for 60R per night. Outstanding hotels in Buzios were R90. 1 real for a beer, etc.
In 2003 R200 = $55. Now R200 = $118. I had a girlfriend in Copacabana. 3 week vacation I would bring $3000 and we would travel to Buzios or Parati or fly to Porto Seguro or Salvador and we would go shopping almost every day and eat in nice restaurants and drink every night and stay in nice places and rent a car or buggy. In Rio I would stay in her apartment but sometimes when we had rental car we would stay at motels, R50 with dinner and breakfast and jacuzzi.
It seemed ridiculous at the time. Very very very cheap. Now I think more expensive. That meal in 2003 was R60. It is still R60 or maybe R80.
Tell me people. Is it 3x more expensive in brazil now?
Brazil way more expensive now I think. Thinking of going back.
Any newbies reading this. Go to Brazil. It is wonderful. There is no place on earth like it.

[/QUOTE]I am not sure where you are getting that information unless you confuse periods with question marks. Brazil runs about 5-10% inflation so that 60 real dinner could easily be 100 now.
