Materialism is not something that is so straightforward to be studied. It's hard to define it, and say set a of people are more over others. There are circumstances the create desires for material goods. These are studies based on questionnaires. Dunno how much that is worth. I think sampling will vary depending on what sets. Social studies often suffer of expectation bias. Or sampling is not enough.

I googled, and enough websites states China is, India is(above document says US is 2nd around the time of study, but others say not quite so high), and there are some variance to which country is the most materialistic(depends on how it's defined or the questionnaire, or other dependancies). I dunno if anybody has enough knowledge to generalize that a nation is more so over another.

With wealth, you can buy a lot of stuff, expensive stuff. No money, you wish you could. No access, you can't buy. What you haven't seen, not on the wishlist.

[/QUOTE]Phenomenon that ROs spend more on "status" items relative to their income level is well documented. My observations of RO civilians is mostly limited to the time I spent in Italy. I acknowledge that the Romanians in Italy would represent the extreme end of the spectrum, since people who migrate tend to do so because they are chasing economic opportunities.

In US, materialism and consumerism in the 80's often pointed out. The example you pointed out is of somebody that has ran into an expensive or regarded as better quality product, relaying that to folks that are not able to experience. Showing off or very narrow mindedness. This kind of activity goes on with people in such scenarios all over. In difference level of economic situations there are different level of that goes on.

You got the ipads, macbooks, iphones, brand clothes, and they are available everywhere. You just see it more commonly in some places over others. Rarer it is, a bigger group of envy I presume. More people able to afford, it just become more common. Not a big deal.

What is common to the section I pointed out in the study is that those places in Europe were going through a transition, in those specific cases were from communist era with peeople were deprived of goods or the funds to afford luxury(in relative terms).

As far as general materialism, it's not linked to a nation, but circumstances. In every nation there are those that are more materialistic over others. Perhaps some might be in the level of being parallel to addiction. Addiction meaning something that not necessarily of high importance becoming central if observed by a normal person.

You got rich folks that is able to afford expensive toys. You got middle class takes high importance to material things. You got poor folks that would rather place high importance in material goods as priority.

Materialism is everywhere, but in some nations it is more rebound of past, like eastern Europe they used to communist and everyone lived under suppression, so when capitalism came and they are free from suppression, they explode with easy money they got.

It is opposite culture of Germany and Japan. After we lost war. We became extremely poor and in bad situation in the world. But we kept our head down, using our brain and worked and those who got rich did not leave the country, but invested in the industries that created our strong hold in world economy in most areas whether it is car, bank, technologies etc.

However, since we worked for it, we tend to have tendency to be more conservative when it comes to buying material because we know what it took us to get to the top and simply both nations education system are pretty solid.

It is hard to determine exactly about the behavior difference of different countries, but the nations past, history, culture, and characteristic tendency reflect on how people behave, its industries and how wealthy the nation is and if it will sustain being on the top level or not.
