It is a weird situation, me and my friend lives in the United States, and he is got a pen-pal in Medellin, and his pen-pal convinced him to invest a lot of money to build a house at that Buenos Aires neighborhood. And my friend he is not a monger. In exchange, he own small part of that building. Although he paid mostly of the house. And now he can live in a room with no windows, and I can live there too. But I am thinking his Medellin friend had take advantage of him and there might be something sketchy behind this shit deal. The only condition is if I live there, I can not bring hookers to the house.

I'm guessing your friend didn't use lawyers and contracts for his real estate investment. If not, he owns nothing. Depending on where it's located, a windowless room is not going to be comfortable, no air flow.

I would also question whether staying there for free is possible. You or he will most likely be presented with a list of things the house needs and payment will be expected.

Dial-a-entertainment refers to having women you can message to come have sex with you. Which doesn't matter if you stay at a place where you can't have visitors.

Why there are so many middle age Colombian man just sitting and standing on the sidewalk? I feel really insecure. After I calculate how much I spend on my frist trip, I realized I couldn't afford living in Poblado and laurels and facebook girls on regular basic. I am thinking centro would be my place next time. I went there but I only went to strip clubs because somehow, I feel more comfortable in a strip club than walking around on the street and I don't speak Spanish I couldn't pull my phone out on centro for safety reason. I understand those strange men are probably just labors resting but why the fuck standing and sitting right next to the street girls? Can't you just make some space if you want to have a beer then sit inside the bar? Some of them are younger guys but that make me even more uncomfortable what the fuck are you doing the only explanation is they are looking for foreign tourist victim. Shit.

If they were waiting for foreign tourist victims then they would starve to death. Or maybe you are just shy and do not want anyone to see you talking to a street girl. Don't worry. Nobody thinks you are there to do confession inside Vera Cruz church. They know you are there for the same reason as everyone else and nobody gives a shit.

You are totally applying your developed world mindset on a developing country. You are used to eating your Dominos' pizza a certain way and expect to get it exactly the same in anywhere in the world. The world won't change for you, you have to morph to the world you are in. These are not strange men, just normal men doing their normal things. Not saying it's totally safe but much safer (in my opinion) than what you are making it to be.

I am not saying you should do what you are not comfortable with. If you are not comfortable walking the take a cab.

And you can join in and play chess on the street, or various card games. Etc. And if they are around the street girls they may have some connection, their boyfriends, husbands, pimps, brothers, or just guys hoping to find someone within their budget. But I would guess none of them are looking for a foreign tourist victim. Or very very few. Those looking for a victim will not be standing around, they will be on the move, following you looking for an opportune spot, or in Parque Lleras where the potential victims are in abundance.

As for finding a place to live, I don't think your options are limited to Poblado or else centro. There are many other parts of the city where you might be more comfortable than centro, but that are more economical than Poblado. And I would not put Laureles into the same category as Poblado either, but again it depends where and what in either of them.

Some are retired or have the day off or whatever but they go to the park to hangout and to meet and talk with friends or family and even strangers. Hard to believe today but 50 years ago Parque Bolivar was the place to meet especially at night after dinner. Totally safe. But that was then however meeting in parks is part of life in many countries. I just wanted to add to this post and agree with everything said. Having said that, it's understandable that some who aren't used to this may think otherwise and feel threatened and it's always a good idea to keep your guard up just don't get too paranoid.

Great thoughts ChuchoLoco and Zeos1. Generally people in US and the developed world live more individual and lonely lives and are not exposed to the "We" concept, these are "I" societies. As is evident in the data, this leads to significantly more depression and loneliness and less stronger bonds between people.

People in the developing world have less resources and live in more "We" based environments that leads to less loneliness and depression.

#2 reason I like Latin America. We all know what #1 is :)

Some of them are pimps or handlers keeping a close eye on and protecting their moneymakers, some are not.

If you could learn some spanish you might be able to evesdrop and figure them out.

The best way to prevent this is to stay home. Its not similiar to rural Nebraska.

It's very simple really. Strolling and socializing in parks and pedestrian zones like Junin is the only affordable entertainment for most of the population because it's free. Most Colombians are so poor that things we take for granted like movies, bars, restaurants and concerts are beyond their financial reach.
