25 years ago in the process of finding myself a wife (in the pre-internet age) I corresponded (snail mail) with 6 young well educated women in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Manila, (students, nurses, teachers).
No chatting, no e-mail, no cam = a lot of work.
Not one ever asked me directly and specifically for money, which does not mean that I did not send any, in fact during the course of three years I did send and spent a good deal but it was unsolicited or I considered it necessary.
Gifts for Christmas, Birthdays or Valentine's, airline tickets or transportation costs to meet me in M or C, some pocket money, clothes etc.
If you bring your girl for a day to some nice beach resort (in Mactan say) , make sure that she has at least a good swimsuit and a lovely dress.
Well one student (Davao) did send me a list of american accounting books and manuals that she needed for her studies and exams but could not afford and asked me most politely to send them to her ASAP if that was OK with me.
The books were not very expensive but sending them so that she could get them fast and in a manner such that they would not be stolen definitely was not.
On that occasion alone I did spend a heck of a lot more than $20, but somewhat later the graduation pictures did not seem fake nor the grateful letters.
At least for her all this time spent writing letters was not altogether wasted and had a positive outcome.
If only I could say the same for those like her that I had to turn down.
In retrospect I wish that they also had asked for something that they could not afford yet needed, as they of course did.
For something reasonable I would probably have obliged but they never asked nor did I offer it.
