I agree with MauiDude. I have always felt relatively safe in the Philippines even compared to Vancouver which is pretty safe, but I also recognize that if shit happens you are on your own. NO one is likely to help you unless you are travelling with friends.
THis is a third world country and there are lots of hungry people who will not think twice of taking a run at you. Would not want to count how many filipinos I have come across with edged weapons or firearms.
Be observant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Dont get falling down drunk unless your in the safety of your hotel or other place. Take a trike at night.
Trust no one...this is not the type of place for
overt signs of wealth. You fools with the gold chains and expensive watches had better take notice.
Keep a low profile and be very careful of the bar girls you associate with. In my experience alot of of them have filipino boy friends and there is no such thing as dicretion on their parts.
I think its a good idea to use the short time rooms at places like Bangkok hotel down across from Paradise beer Garden on lower Fields. At least till you get a good feel for the girl.
Had a friend last year staying up on Perimeter and one of the bar girls brought this guy right to his hotel over a pool cue that he was remotely interested in. Basically intimidated him into buying it at inflated price. Later that week another girl he thought was a newbie to bars and so sweet...had her husband calling him and threatening him.
Keep your intineary too yourself and dont be giving out too much personal info.
Be safe and smile even when your pissed off...dont engage the locals unless there is absolutely no alternative. You will come out on the losing end no matter who you think you are.
Philippines is still alot of fun but the more time Im there the wiser I get, I hope.

No I dont think the girls are much cleaner than the sticky floor at Jolly Frog. The one girl that got the cum shot walked out of the room and spit out right on the floor in front of a few more girls. Not one girl batted an eye.

I have a colleague in Manila who I'll catch-up with socially, and I've warned him out that I'll prob fly into Clark on Tiger or Air Asia, and I'm sure he'd enjoy the excuse to get up there as well.

I'll actually be arriving in Manila on a Sat around 7pm, and departing Manila again on Mon around 11am. The main hassle is getting to/from AC on arrival at manila.

Having read a number of posts/sites, it seems the most direct way to get to AC is by car, probably from the hotel, for around about PHP2500 +/- . I'd probably have to do the same for the return. I reckon that this means my arrival time in AC would be around 10:30pm (1 hr for arrival processing and 2.5 hrs Manila to AC.) Similarly for the return.....

So, it seems that getting to/from AC will cost PHP 5,000 and around 3.5-4 hours on Sat night.

Is it worth the hassle? I could simply grab a hotel near EDSA and see what is happening ... but that has been done before, albeit quite some time ago.

You can take a bus from Swagman hotel which is next to Bayview hotel.
It is 600 pesos for one person. If you are three or more people sharing a car is good.

Kind of a strange question, but are there any bars without dancers that have good music and cheap drinks where I can go to relax for a couple hours in the afternoons? Something around Perimeter/Fields would be great.

I guess I asking for something more like a beer bar in Thailand, somewhere I can go and chill and get my drink on.

There are pros to a personal driver though such as a vehicle to yourself with A/C and a direct drive straight to your hotel near Field's Avenue; This is where the action resides. I would recommend staying at a hotel near Field's Avenue. The swag hotel in Angeles is no walking distance to the action nightlife. The closer you are to Field's Avenue the more convenient IMHO.

You can take the Bus going to AC at 8.30 PM. At that time of the night the taxi from airport to swagman hotel should take approx 20-25 minutes. Cost will be approx 200 pesos.
On the way back it is better to come the previous day and stay in Manila for one night. Yes, You can make the flight if you take a taxi early in the morning from AC but as for me I hate to get up early after a night of boozing and womanizing.
