I doubt any of their Dominican or Haitian boyfriends give them any gifts. Some chicas could easily give whatever gifts they get, to their Dominican or Haitian boyfriends.

It is nice to be generous with a person you like, but, be careful, some chicas will use and abuse a guy just as well as some guys use chicas.

It is your money (I don't like anyone telling me how to spend my money), giving her a $50 or $100 or more, phone may make economic sense, the chica might be very happy with the gift and stay with you for three or more days. So you might be saving money in the long run, rather than if you went out and paid different chicas to be with you for three or more days. Some chicas will factor in that you gave them a nice gift, but some chicas will still ask for money, even if you gave them a nice gift.

If the chica is hardcore in her demands for a particular expensive phone, then it might be best to walk away from her. There are plenty of non-high-maintenance chicas in DR, no need to have to have a greedy DR chica by your side.

Anything resaleable is likely to be given to, or taken from them by, their local boyfriend or "chulo". Or sold for less than you paid for it to buy food for themselves and children or to pay the rent. This last is a better use of your money but better to give them cash in the first place.

Very few will consider a gift as part payment of their normal fee. The rule is:
Give if it gives you pleasure to give. But don't expect gratitude or appreciation of what the gift is worth.

As ever there are exceptions to all of above but wise to assume your chica is not one of the exceptions. Then you might just get a pleasant surprise but don't count on it!

I have been to POP and was thinking about Sousa, sounds like you had a great trip. Is NG within walking distance to most stuff? And are there always chicas at NG for you to choose. I also was at BB and that was good but so far out of the way, was thinking about FOD but not a lot of info.

The rest of the week started out slow but by Wednesday the place was hopping. I had a good time the first trip but had a better time this trip. An understanding of how the game is played gave me more confidence and a better game plan.

Basic Routine:

I spent the afternoons diving, arriving back at the NG around 5pm. After a quick shower and a beer I would select a house girl for a ST session followed by a nap and them a late dinner. La Passions

La Passions is a great bar and the ladies are top notch. Don’t think you could go wrong with any of the La Passion girls. You pay a premium but get a drama free, first class lady who will keep her end of the deal.

The first night I introduced myself to Peter & he introduced me to the bar manager. Don’t remember the manager’s name but she was great. Really looked after the interest of the bar, girls and customers. She was always around making sure everyone was happy and getting a fair deal. I asked her to set me up with a lady who spoke English. So she brings over Anabel. After a bit of flirting Anabel shows me the menu. When I pointed to the take out option she was all smiles. A nice easy night laid ahead for her. I ate a late breakfast every morning at the NG and skipped lunch. I had over priced ribs at Rocky’s one night and sampled the BBQ at the NG. I also tried the Scotch 'N' Sirloin Restaurant at the Terra Linda hotel. It was ok put pricy. The rest of the week I ate at the Casa Valeria. For 600 pesos I got an excellent dinner and drink served in a comfortable and relaxed environment. A couple of locals recommended the restaurant at the Hotel Orchidee. Maybe I’ll try it next time but the entrance does not look very appealing.

I also had several good late night snacks from the street vendors. The best way to deal with the vendors is to let your chica chose the vendor. Tell her to order whatever she wants but order two. Give her a couple hundred pesos and stand back. She’ll return with a great cheap snack.

Money:

The exchange shop around the corner from the Happy Bar on Duarte was giving 36.5 pesos to the dollar. Nice clean secure place. The street guys were giving 36 pesos’ to the dollar.

Beach:

After checking into the NG Sunday afternoon & running a few errands I headed to the beach. After walking up and down looking for all the places I read about I spent the rest of the afternoon at the Scandinavian beach bar nursing a few beers while watching the world past by. This was my first and only venture to the beach.

Diving:

I wanted to use Scuba Elite again this year but when I walk by on the way to the beach on Sunday they were closed. Monday afternoon I stopped by with my gear but Kerri was taking her son to the airport and was not running a trip. So I walk down the street and tried Northern Coast Diving. Dove two days with them and it was a disaster. They are a large commercial operation who mixed snorkelers, student divers and divers of mixed experience all on the same boat. I spent more time floating on the surface them I did on the bottom. It took forever to get everyone in and down and when the first newbie blew through their air the whole group had to surface. I went back to Scuba Elite the third day. Kerri runs a great boutique shop. Her male partner and dive master moved on so she now is a one women shop but appreciates the business and is willing to work with you. I spent the rest of the week diving with Kerri and a pleasant guy from an all inclusive. The diving is not world class but you do not go to the DR for the diving. It is just pleasant way to spend an afternoon. This year I did not get up for the morning dives.

Motos’

I used the motos’ for the first time this year. They are a great way to get around town. I would just hop on and tell the driver where I wanted to go. When I got off I would hand the driver 50 pesos, say gracias and walk way. I only had a minor issue once and I knew I was going to have a problem before getting on. On the way back from La Passion this guy pulls up on more of a sport bike then a moto. He was also wearing a leather jacket worth 350-400 us. When we reach the NG I handed him and Anabel's driver 50 pesos each. My driver started going on about wanting 100. I just said ‘no, 50’, took Anabel's hand and walk into the NG. Off course having the NG security guard standing at the curb probably help defuse the situation.

Phone

I brought a phone from the Claro shop on Pedro Clisante just beyond Dr. Rosen. The phone with a 100 peso card cost 495 pesos. I purchased an additional 500 peso card and called the States each night & made several local calls. The waitresses at the Casa Valeria help me set it up so the menus and recordings were in English. The phone had voice mail but I never used it so I don’t know if it actually worked. It was a good investment.

Pharmaceutical Help

Last year I tried the DR version of Viagra and had a reaction so decided to use only the prescription versions this year. I use Viagra at home but decided to try Cialis. I took 10mg each morning and I was good to go all day and all night. It got me hard at the appropriate times but did not leave me with a ragging hard on when to deed was done like Viagra does.

Street Kids & Vendors

There were a lot more Haitian street kids this year. They are a sad lot; truly hungry, thirsty and real desperate. Problem is they are also violent. So far the violence has been amongst themselves but sooner or later it will expand. There were also lots of old Haitian women/men walking around selling all kinds of stuff from hard boiled eggs to CDs. They were not aggressive. I just replied no gracias to their sales pitch and kept walking.

Tipping

I left the maid $5 each morning and a small bag of chocolates. It was money well spent. She could not do enough for me. My room was made up whenever I wanted, she left a pile of towels each day and I had at least a dozen & half bars of unused soap by the end of the week.

I also tipped the security guard $5 every couple of nights to watch my back. I did not need his help this year but it was good to knew he was round and knew me. He greeted me every night at the gate, would keep an eye on my room as he patrol & was at my side when I had the minor issue with the last moto guy. I also found him to be a source for ice. I like to drink scotch on the rocks but was drinking it ‘neat’ for lack of ice early in the week. One hot night while sitting on the balcony with my chica I notice the guard going to the ice box & filling up a pitcher so he would have cold water to drink. Down stairs I went with my translator & typed in ‘ice’. He shook his head ‘yes’, walked away and came back with a bag of ice for me. I was set for the rest of the week. I did have a funny situation with him one night. I tried to explain that I was going to dinner next door and if Margareta came looking for me have her wait or send her next door. After going back and forth I finally got a smile of understanding and he starts to run upstairs. I thinking ‘shit, Margareta is with someone and he is going pull her out of the room resulting in some very unhappy campers’. When I see him coming back down the stairs I start laughing my ass off. He was carrying an arm full of towels. How he interpreted me looking for Margareta for waiting towels is beyond me but he was definitely trying to accommodate me.

Chica Prices

There were guys talking about paying 500 pesos for BJs and no more than 1,000-1,500 for TLN. Then they would start telling horror stories about the chicas, who would leave early, not provide the services promised, try to up sell, stole things or just went crazy. I wanted drama free sessions with pleasant and playful chicas and was willing to pay a premium for it. I gave the NG girls 1200 to 1500 for ST, Margareta 2000 per night, and the La Passion girls 2500 to 3500 with a 500 tip. I enjoyed their services & had no problems with any of them. When the girls went into the bathroom to refreshing up I would leave the money and a small box of chocolates by their belongings. I also had a traveling toothbrush/toothpaste for each girl. Mouth wash, cups and plenty of clean towels were also available. If the chica was hungry we went to the strip for food after round one. While we ate our meal on the balcony I recharged. I did have a funny misunderstanding with one NG chic. I offered 1,000 pesos for ST but she wanted 1500. It was getting dark and without my glasses I could not see well. This chica was with me everyday for every hour my last trip and only would leave when I asked her to. Planning to have the same setup this go-around. Plus I get "extras" with her (not going to spell out what those extras are, but I luv my extras :))

But yeah, there is no way in hell I am buying a chica a laptop. I am a tech junky myself and I am not going to give her something like that when that money could have gone to a new iPhone 4G, MacBook Pro, or iPad. I agree with what you and others said; something as expensive as a laptop would probably just get taken, stolen, or sold.
