I spent four days in Nosy Be in June. 'Walking Street' was pleasantly manic and merely catching a girl's eye seemed to be enough to get them to approach you. I bought them beers and on two nights took a girl back to my hotel.

Each wanted more but compromised at 60 K ($14). IDs were checked at the hotel although both were in their early 20's. The security guards were also tipped. Neither was very adventurous in bed and would not let me take a photo. Both asked for 10 K taxi money.

Not much English spoken but my schoolboy French and Google Translate was more than sufficient.

Getting out of the country was almost as manic as getting in. The immigration officer was insistent I had overstayed my visa which was not required for less than 15 days. He wanted a 10 euro "administration fee" in order to let me escape.

I'm back there soon and should be able to give a further report.

I had already understood that it was an open-air brothel in Pattaya style where the only words in French you have to learn are "as much as you want to fuck". Boh. Everyone has their own tastes but for me it's a place for losers.

If you look at the provisions they are very muddled and contradictory. For instance it is illegal to have sex with a girl under 15 in one part and 18 (Article 333) in another. Likewise it states that expats living in Madagascar are committing an offence if they engage in sex tourism in another country.

Article 335 states that "any owner. In charge of a bar. Who does not oppose the habitual presence of one or more persons engaged in prostitution in the premises are deemed to be a criminal". Nosy Be would be a ghost town if that was enforced.

If the government really wanted to address these issues they would raise the age of consent from 14 and make prostitution illegal. But that would presumably upset the locals too much.

These laws have never been enforced. The police lack the resources and the government lacks the will not least because of the hugely damaging effect it would have on the tourism industry. Of course, as with some other countries, even though the laws are ignored, it does offer an opportunity for unscrupulous police officers to use it as a reason to extract bribes.

SouthEaster is quite correct. But one still needs to be careful.

Nosy Be was buzzing although nothing much happens after 9. 00 pm.

There were several girls hovering at the entrance to 'walking street' and a lot of girls either in the bars or walking up and down the street normally in pairs. Those in the bars were the more professional and many had phones and could afford to buy drinks; the ones on the street tended to be younger and less experienced.

Walking into the town most girls responded to a smile and it felt safe. Lots of French tourists either families or single older men.

I am staying in a well-positioned hotel above a restaurant. Although not 5-star it was new, clean and good value. There was no problem with bringing girls back although ID was requested.

I met a pretty 23 yo who was inexperienced but enthusiastic. She wanted 5000 (just over $1) but I insisted on giving her more and took her out to have a pizza.

Thank you for the enlightening, additional comments on the legal situation.

It supports my thoughts that as a tourist you are protected to a certain extent by the profiting industry, hotels, bars you name it. However, this protection is only marginal and ultimately many want to make a quick and easy buck off you. Yes, be aware of this and act accordingly.

However, as always, to each his own!

I am aware that some less than honest cop could make my life miserable in a delicate situation. It is part of the deal. Do I worry about it? Not one bit. Most of the time a little discretion and common sense will keep you out of trouble. When it's unavoidable there is always the great leveler. Money. Doesn't work every time, but close.

Anyway I did like Mada so much that I'm planning to come for 6 months this time, any tip for visa? Do they do visa extensions in the immigration office? How do you guys do this, some of you stays there for very long time.

I continuously can't receive the Tinder login code on my phone. The account is several months old, then all of a sudden my phone don't receive the codes anymore. For two weeks I couldn't log in. Then it worked again for two weeks. Now I can't login for 3 weeks.

It's not some ban or shadow ban, I can't create a new account either.

I'm using Tinder on my pc in my browser. Obviously want to see who I'm looking at. Can't get codes when I install Bluestacks either. This happened in Zim and Zambia as well. Tried to buy a new phone number with Telma and open another account with another email adres. Doesn't work either. Tried 3 different phone providers in Zim, didn't work.

Now it get's worse. Tried to open a Google account with my brand new Telma number. Nope, immediately sais it's been used too often. No it hasn't, it's brand new.

Even worse, can't get onto Facebook either with the new number. Maybe it's the combination with my Tutamail account, still going to try with a Yahoo.

I'm out of options.

If Tinder not working is ruining your life, you need a new one. Jesus H Christ. Mada is a black hole for all that shit, as you have found out. Wait till you leave.

My advice. You don't need to bother. Just get the usual 2 month and ignore the remaining 4. It will all work out when you leave. Trust me.

I use Gail and use my own credit card for an Apple pay subscription.
